I was ask about how long these engines lasted, and don't have an answer. would some of you durmax owners care to comment? reliability,fuel mileage and longevity. Thanks

I don't own one, but I know several who do.  They love the motor.  No issues with it, as good mileage or better than a Cummins or Powerstroke.  They all got the truck with the Allison transmission as well.  While they don't have over 100,000 on any of theirs yet, I've seen several for sale with over 250,000 miles on them.  So at least they last that long, LOL.  I know a guy who's got it in a 17ft straight truck on a 3500 van frame, and he says that he gets 500 miles on a tank of gas, with mixed city/hwy driving.

There is a used truck dealer around 70 miles from here that deals in fleet vehicles from trucking companies, construction companies, etc.  They seem to sell them as fast as they get them in, whether the motor is in a 2500, 3500, 4500, etc. 

IMO, the best thing about them is that they're relatively quiet for a diesel motor.

Last fall I traveled with a sales rep in Colorado. He was driving a 18 mo old Duramax. The comment he made that I remember was the truck has 150,000 miles and it does not have the power it had when new.

A friend had a GMC 05 2500. He had to use the lemon law due to a bad wiring harness GMC didn't want to tackle the fix. Another guy at work has a Chevy with the Duramax and likes it but he has had to have the injectors replaced. (under a recall)

Own a 02 Chevy crew cab 4x4 with duramax Second owner. 18 mpg hiway loaded or empty. 150000 plus miles so far. Have replaced broken belt and tension pulley. Other than that no problems. We pull a track hoe and logs for milling. Load it up and go. Has all the power I need. Yes, very happy owner

My 08 service truck has decent power and does fair on fuel.
Had the a set of injectors replaced under warranty.
I don't like the exhaust filter garbage my truck idles a lot and is always stopping up the filter.
In cold weather I have to use a lot of anti gel additive and carry extra fuel filters.
Nothing is more fun than -15 with the wind blowing 40-50 mph on a lonely North Dakota highway changing a fuel filter in a white out.

I wouldn't trade my 12v Cummins for a train load of duramaxes

Mine doesn't have enough miles on it to address the durability question. It does do well on mileage but it is an '03. I understand the new emission controls added to all diesel trucks a couple of years ago put a severe dent in fuel mileage. I filled up last Thursday after some combined town-highway driving. The highway was at speeds of 65-75 mph but mostly at 70 mph. I got an even 20 mpg. I have pulled a 30', 15,000# camper into the mountains of northern NM and back home getting a best trip mileage of 12 mpg and a low of 11.3mpg. The high was with no headwind coming home and the low was pushing a pretty stiff head wind. I tow the trailer at 62-65 mph but do get a run at steep climbs and do not use the cruise control towing except in the flatlands. I did 22 mpg on an interstate run empty one time.

I put 189000 on one , a 2004 3/4 ton crew cab 4wd . It was fast when not loaded . It got about 16.5 mpg . The 4wd was almost useless in much more than a little snow . I have owned a ford 7.3 - best mpg great 4wd , older dodge - strong tow , chevy duromax poor millage and poor tow truck , new dodge best tow truck and ok mpg . and very fast and strong 4wd not great though.

132k on mine and no problems except speedometer. The engine uses 1qt per 10k miles. 05 GMC.
