When explaining why I choose the 45-70, I tell others this: Which will do more damage to a brick wall, a race car going 200 MPH or a freight train going 60 MPH? If they don't 'get it' after this they never will.

I suspect that the .308 the guy used technically had more energy than what appears to have been a trapdoor .45-70 load. So why doesn't it penetrate as well? Becasue the lighter, skinnier bullet tumbles and breaks up, while the heavier bullet stays together?

I remember reading an article by Chuck Hawkes where he basically dismisses momentum (velocity x mass) as a measure of bullet effectiveness, in favor of energy (velocity squared x mass). But at least in terms of penetration, momentum seems to be a better predictor. Momentum is a measure of an object's inertia which is basically an indicator of how much force is needed to change its state of motion (velocity/direction).  The more momentum a projectile has, the harder it is to stop (the freight train versus race car analogy comes to mind).

I take what Chucky says with a grain of salt most of the time.  :D :D

Smashing bricks and plywood and sheetrock and soda bullets makes for a cool presentation but means squat when it comes to wither a bullet will be effective on dispatching most game animals we hunt here,It does come in Handi too know if I have to shoot thru several walls to get at someone which one to use though... :D :D :D :D :D

Shoot a 45 cal slug into a well constructed sand bag at 15 feet..will it penetrate..some I am sure...lighter slugs most likely not..but..take a 500 grain field tipped arrow shoot it from a 60lb. bow and see what happens..

Oh man i guess that proves this young guy at work wrong he tells everyone that my 45/70 is so slow at 200 yards that he could catch the bullet.  Told him if he wanted to be my guest i'm not.  ;D

I know it does one heck of a job on a hog!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.
