Well in HP pistols you loose vel with the shorter barrel, not alot but some. Take 243 Win 55gr bullet out of 10" barrel 3329fps vs 243 Win same 55gr bullet out of a 24" barrel 4000fps. Shorter barrel don't use all the powder to push the bullet as fast.

Dinny, Parke county. Diesel, I understand the deference in vel. from short barrel long barrel. But their  logic I dont. Some guys I hunted with were capable of 300 yard accuracy with a 30-06 handgun. Not all but some. So the only conclusion I can come to is the people who make the rules know nothing about guns or ammo. ::)

As far as people shooting further than they should I'm with you. But I never hunted opening day of gun season after that first year. I swear there must have been a big sale on semi shotguns and slugs the night before cause I bet I heard 3000.00 worth of ammo burned up in under an hour. Well after I recovered from the duck and cover position ???

I hear ya, sounds like you were in Perry County. LoL  ;)

Thanks, Dinny

This is the real problem.  Whether you call them slob hunters, nut cases or just plain idiots.  As an example, I have 2 holes from a 30-06 in my shop wall about 5' apart.  I was in the shop when they came through.  These rounds were fired from a bit over a mile away by a young man who claimed to have been shooting at a coyote.  This is one of the reasons why, regardless of state law, there will always be regulations around here imposed by the landowners as to what you will be allowed to use and where and how it will be allowed.  Neighbors have had livestock shot, barns and silos shot and even farm equipment.  Such things aren't done by the folks that live here but by either people we've trusted to allow to hunt or by people that just assume the world is their oyster and go where they please.  Either way, the situations have been handled so that I don't believe there has ever been a reoccurrence by any of the same individuals once confronted.

The rifle and handgun laws are silly and confusing to those of us who know and understand firearms but there is a well intentioned basis for them.  The only thing we can do is to try to educate the lawmakers.  Socalled hunter education courses aren't going to help.  They're nothing more than another revenue generator.  One local instructor has accidentally shot himself not once, but twice.   ::)  Besides, you can't teach a fool to be anything other than a fool.

Well, just from a personal standpoint, I wish I could use my .45-70 Marlin GG.  I have a Marlin 1894, 44mag, that I have used the last 2 seasons, but its not in the league of the .45-70.  Yet trajectory on it is very similar to 3 pellet, muzzleloader loads.  Oh well, just wishin ::) ;D
