muzzle tamers,,how are they attached? ---T/C's answer
« on: March 28, 2010, 11:22:27 AM »
How does T/C attach the muzzle tamers on the 45/70 barrels. Was going to cut it today but got to wondering just how it's attached: threaded, threaded and loctite, threaded and silver soldered, slip tight fit and silver soldered?
Anyone know?

I remember hearing tales of them shooting off when the adhesive let loose, but I have no first had experience with that.

that indicates they might just be a slip fit w/adhesive. I could take a torch to one but I'll ask the makers first! Ha!

Just got off the phone with T/C. They say the MT is threaded on, and once installed is NOT removable without damaging barrel. I asked her [custom shop] about what adhesive if any is used, and also was a 'hot brake-cold barrel' shrink fit performed during assembly. She said she did not know. I asked to speak to someone that knew. She said "unfortunately none of our technicians have phones.....".
Oh well. Time to get out the torch and barrel vise. I'll try 'some' heat and torque. Don't really care if I damage the Muzzzle Tamer but want to preserve the integrity of the barrel.
Otherwise, spin the lathe and hand me the scalpel!
My friend's lathe is a large Colchester, a 15" x [really long bed] used for barrels as long as my leg. however the spindle bore is about 2 1/8" ID, and as large as that is it will not quite clear the breech end of a Contender barrel if I attempt to hold that end inside the chuck/spindle area. Looks like a hack saw and file job unless I fit a "spider" onto the muzzle end of the barrel so I can true the bore and cut/crown precisely.

I would probably hacksaw it a little long. Then chuck
it up and true the muzzle. You may end up with a 12" barrel whe you are finished

You may have the best idea! I offered this up for a trade for what I wanted [14" blue w/sights and NO MT]....but maybe I'll offer it for sale and buy what I want.
