What do I have?
« on: March 07, 2010, 07:43:11 PM »
I bought a Sears & Roebuck 45cal muzzleloader last year and I have no idea about it. It has stamp on the barrel Sears & Roebuck 45 cal made in Japan. It also has the numbers 1926. Can anyone tell me anything about this rifle? What is it worth? It looks just like a Kentucky Rifle. It is in great shape if it was every fired it does not look it. I will be thankful for all and any help.

seems like i had one of those about late 70's early eighties.if its the gun im thinking it is, you could get it eitther as a kit or a finished gun. i got the kit, i was like 14 or so and put it all together myself. does it have a brass plate seperating the rear of the stock from the forestock?i think they made the stocks that way so they would ship in a shorter box.mine turned out rather crude looking but shot extremely well.i think the kits went of like 89 buks and the finished guns 129$ or around there.got any pics of it?

Sears used to sell muzzleloaders made by Miroku Firearms in Japan.   Fairly cheap at the time from Sears, but still good grade coming from that company.   Miroku is probably better known for their high end shotguns (Daly, Browning, Winchester, etc).

Had one of those myself years ago. Some were marked "Markwell Arms",  some weren't. Very simple guns with cheap/primitive locks, but suprizingly good shooters with some tuning to the lock. I have one of those barrels standing on the corner of my work bench, that I got in trade some years back and never got around to doing anything with it.  I think I remember it having very broad/shallow lands & grooves which did surprizingly well with Mini balls in spite of the slow twist.

Thanks for the replies fellows. I just wish I knew when it was made. I will try and get a picture of it tomorrow and post it. I don't have no interest in shooting I bought it for a wall hanger to put on some mounted deer feet and maybe hang a possible bag with it. The story I got was the fellow I got it from said his grandmother bought it for his grandfather for anniversary or birthday.  Can't remember now.

That was probably a CVA kit. They made Kentucky rifles that had a 2 piece stock with a brass spacer back in the day. I don't know if they still make that model now but I've seen the same kind of lock on the cheaper Bobcat rifles or Traditions Deerhunter models. I beleive the CVA and Traditons caplocks both came from the same place in Spain.
I remember the CVA Kentucky rifles from way back in 1973.
The one that I'd like to find is the over and under rifle that Hopkins and Allen? used to make that had 2 barrels  on it and the lower one could be rotated in position after the top barrel had been fired.
