Encore 30-30 barrel?
« on: March 17, 2010, 05:48:17 PM »
Has anybody seen an Encore barrel in 30-30? Would like to have one, but backorder seems to be until about July.

You may want to take a look at ED's contenders. I just bought a 15 inch 7mm-08 barrel from him he's a good dude.

Go to (MGM) Match Grade Machines and have you one made. It is about the same price as a T/C factory and is a much better barrel and you can have it in less than 6 weeks. I just got a 14" Contender SS Shilen barrel from them in 30-30AI and with a stating load for the 30-30 Win with some IMR 4320 powder that I have had for ages and just needed to get rid of it and some pulled military 147 gr FMJ bullets, did not want to use some good bullets for fire forming cases, it would shoot under 1 inch groups at 100 yards. Now that is a good barrel. I can't wait to shoot it with some good bullets and proper loads.

If you reload and want a t/c barrel, go on and get a 15'' .308W barrel.  Load it down to about 1800fps for 30-30 performance.  It's very manageable on recoil.  Richard

Now that's not a bad idea.  Although it's not a recoil issue, just like the 30-30 is all.  Still... you gots me thinking.  Maybe I'll just swap off the 7-08 barrel for a .308.  Then I'll still be using the same caliber.

I like 30-30s, too, so I can relate to looking for one in an Encore.  I happened into a 308w Encore barrel.  I havent grouped it yet but I did a bit of chrono for it.  These are my results: Sierra 150 fn  30-30 bullet, seat at the cannelure. With 27gr Acc 2015  2 shots only: 1720 and 1749fps.  With 30gr Acc 2495  again 2 shots: 1695 and 1732fps.  That doesnt tell a lot but I'll bet a deer within 100yds wont know it wasnt a 30-30.  I'm going to go to 32gr of 2495 and try a 100m group.  This remains very preliminary.  Richard

I like your line of thinking.  Please keep me (us) posted w/the results.  I have a contender in 30-30 which is an absolute tack driver.  From field positions I'm getting 1 3/8" groups at 150 yards, thats sitting w/crossed sticks.  My problem is that I want to use one or the other, the Encore or Contender, and part ways with whichever one I decide not to use.  I'm currently trying to sell the Encore and then just add a .22 barrel to the Contender to make it complete.  No takers thus far, so may try to to do opposite, but the 7-08 just doesnt do it for me.  If I can get a deer barrel that I'm happy with, I'd keep the Encore.  I'd like to stay w/30 cal for simplicity.  I have a lot of 30-30 and 06 brass.  I gotta say, this isn't too bad of a problem to have, I just want to keep one, to have and to hold, and to cherish from this day forward.  You know... that kind of thing.  Since I've picked up these T/C's, everything else has just sat in the cabinet.

S.G.   No one is going to hold you to ''one or the other''.  It is nice to have a choice even if it means some redundancy.  I'll tell you that you'll want to shop for a 22 match barrel.  A 10'' will probably be as accurate as a 14'' if you scope it.  The purpose of a 22 is small targets.  Why not be able to see it ?  It would be a lot easier to add the 22 into the Contender herd than the Encore.  Have you considered a 22Hornet ?   It would add extra distance to your 22cal fun.  It will reach out to 200yds (under good light and perfect conditions), but will also suffer in the wind at that distance.  RP

I currently have a 22lr barrel for that Encore w/a 4x Simmons on it.  Tons of fun and it shoots an inch easy at 50 yards with cheap ammo.  I like the 22 hornet but don't have any experience w/it yet.  I think T/C's marketing is second only to Harley Davidson, cause once they get you hooked, its all over.  "What barrel next" seems to be a common thread.  Gotta love it.  :)
