Ordered my new rifle.
« on: March 10, 2010, 11:27:25 AM »
It ain't a Handi but this is where I hang out and I wanted let my Handi buddies know. :D After reading all the good reviews and handling a couple of them I ordered a Stevens 200 chambered in 22-250 and topped with a new Redfield 3-9x40. ;D The optics on the Redfield are crystal clear and it weighs next to nothing. Of course it is covered by the lifetime warranty and best of all IT'S AMERICAN MADE!! It'll be in next week and the shop is going to mount and bore sight the Redfield.
I can't wait to blister some yip dogs with it. ;D ;D

I have one sitting in the safe right now in .223. I've owned several different caliber Mod. 200s and all were good shooters. The newer ones, including my .223, all come with their newer center feed blind magazines. I'm not too crazy about that set up and prefer the older magazine style, but it works. The checkering on the gray stocks can be sharp and usually requires a bit of sanding. I usually give mine a camo paint job.

Spanky,

Congrats on the new shootin' iron.  22-250 is a very fine round to keep the varmits in check.  Make sure you keep your new gun away from that "kid from New Jersey"; seems to me he is kinda destructive. ::)

How 'bout a range report, real interested in how the Redfield works out.   Love the Leupolds and love savin' a few buck even more.

I have one in 223 and love it. Right out of the box I shot an honest 3/4 , 100 yd group. I have since shot ,only 1 time, a real 1in 200 yd group.  what fun !  Did a camo paint job on the stock , changed scopes, and can't wait till the snow is off the range.

Spanky,

Did you try out your new 22-250 rifle with the Redfield Scope?  I just bought a 3x9x40 Redfield for one of my 45 70 handis, hope I made the right choice.

I haven't shot it yet. I have a cast on my right arm. I'm hopin' the cast will come off tomorrow morning when I go to the doc's. If not I've got it for 2 more weeks. :'(
It sucks having a new gun and not being able to shoot it.

Spanky, did you get the cast from the crash? I'm wondering if the reticle in the Redfields is similar to the wide duplex on the Leupolds. I'm hoping so as I plan to have one if I can find one to look through. Good luck with the 22-250.

Bigvarmit,

The recticle on the Redfield I bought looks similiar to the recticle on my kid's VX-1 2x7x33.  I have a Leupold RIfleman Shotgun/MZ scope and the rectile on that scope if much thicker than the Redfield.  I looked through both the 33mm and 40mm Redfields and the rectiles were the same.  There is a second type of rectile on the Redfields, i forget the name, but the local shop didn't carry the other style.

Crappy news from the doctor today. 4 more weeks in a cast. I had to have surgery because I broke my wrist in the crash. Docs took bone from my hip and put it into the wrist with a screw. She said its just starting to mend together and will be fully fused within 4 weeks. I'm just gonna start shooting left handed. ;D Who knows... I might shoot better since I'm left eye dominant. :D

In regards to the redfield... I had a Leupold VariX2 on my 35 whelen and I think this scope is brighter and has a crisper image. I'm planning on getting another one for my 7-08 Handi. It's alot of scope for $149.

FWIW, the Vari-X II was optically the same as the current Rifleman.

Tim

Rifleman

    * Though the Rifleman line of scopes uses a different maintube (for aesthetic reasons), it is optically the same as the Vari-X II (discontinued for 2001). The adjustments are exactly the same as the Vari-X II (½-MOA friction) as are the lenses and coatings. All lenses, internal and external, are coated with magnesium fluoride. Basically, the Rifleman is a newer-looking matte finish version of the Vari-X II that helped build the Leupold reputation. It is important to note that Custom Shop options (reticle changes, target adjustment installation, etc.) are not available for the Rifleman line of scopes.
