The pendulum swings
« on: March 31, 2010, 07:07:26 AM »
Spent a week in SC courtesy of a funeral. With no cell phone or internet in the house, I found time to eat at Chick-Fil-A, the Waffle House, and shop in Walmart, Academy Sports and a multitude of local gun, firework, and pawn shops.

1) People smoking in restaurants surprises me. Have not been to the heartland in a while.

2) Hot asian waitresses speaking in Southern drawls are even hotter

3) Primers, powder, and assorted reloading supplies are everywhere. All you want.

4) Shooting squirrels on the golf course seems fine with the locals. Fishing the golf course is not. Go figure.

5) Handis are really hard to find. Academy had plenty of scoped 7-08 for $279. Pawn shops had plenty of used up $100 Topper shotguns. I saw ONE 30-30. A scoped Topper for $395. That was it. Wow!

Had I stayed another week, I could have attended a tea party. It was pawn shop heaven. Could not throw a stick without hitting a pawn shop, payday loan, or cash for car title place.

Being from SC, let me say that my cell phone does work, I hate smoking in the eating places {slowly going away} and yes used guns are plentiful, handis, not so much. Remington and Browning Bolts seem to have the market here. But you can get one ordered new, just not alot of stockers. And yes, Thank God for TEA Parties, Grits, and Sweet Iced Tea!

I have a good friend who's wife was having trouble having a baby, so they adopted a Korean baby, a little girl.  A month after the adoption wife announced she was going to have a baby.  She had a boy.  My friend was in the Air Force and was stationed in Georgia.  As the kids grew up the boy started talked like Mom and Dad, but the girl having more interaction with local children learned to talk with the Georgia accent.

I visited them when the kids were 10 and 9.  I could not get over this little Korean girl talking like a Southern Belle.  Today that little girl is grown and works for the National Park Service.  She gives lectures and guides people around the park.  She says people just can not understand how an Asian woman can speak with a Southern accent.

And yes, my son Sky thinks she is hot.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I used to work at a place in Mass and my boss was Indian. When I first met him I expected the typical Indian "hello my friend" accent but he started talking with a thick Boston accent which was really funny, apparently he grew up in Worcester, Mass. It wasn't nearly as cute as a hot asian speaking with a southern accent, though. ;)

I've been fortunate enough to be living in the SC low country now for 6 years....and I agree with all of the above   ;)

Btw, Dicks Sporting goods in Summerville had 4 (now 3) Handi's in stock....after discount they're at $259!  These are the bull barreled synthetic camo stocked models with a 4x12 scope especially made for Dicks.
