Guess what
« on: November 15, 2003, 04:42:51 AM »
I got a nice, furry, fat........COON!!!! I took all but one trap to the water yesterday. And wouldn't you know it, I got my very first coon on my one and only dryland set. Go figure. I just now got him skinned out. I took my kids with me this morning and we all got to share this together. Boy were they giggly, LOL. I also had a visit from a coon in one of the sets up on the stream bank. Stepped everywhere but the pan. I put in a little more guiding as well as moved the trap to where the feet were. Maybe my luck is changing. After deer season maybe I will get brave and set some sets for the fox around here. That's all for now. Thanks for all the help, guidance, and advice from everyone. It is and will be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I am not sure if I get more excited when a deer comes by bowhunting or walking up to a trap with a catch in it. Oh yea, it was a perfect front pad catch. I moved this pvc set so that whatever got caught could not reach anything like a tree. Used a #1 Victor coil.

Just for future reference when yo ubuy more traps- the #1 coil is NOT a very efficient coon trap. Pullouts, misses and losses are common with its use.

Yes, I have heard that many times on various forums. But, I bought them from my trapper ed. instructor who said they were good coon traps. I also have #2 coils that were sold to me by a guy who swore these were the best traps for a coon. How was I to know that two people I thought would give good advice would sell me the wrong size traps? If I had lots of money to buy everything all at once I would have the proper traps. I understand where you are coming from. I have had more pullouts and misses than I care to in my first two weeks than I care to remember.

I hear ya- just pointing out that a lot of the misses, etc might not be your fault, but rather your tools....

I am sure the guy did not have deception on his mind when he sold those to you. There are places where they are OK. Not many on my line, but there are some. I don't like either one for coon as I used to get lots of pull outs with them.
Steve is right, it is most likely your equipment.

I will be the first to agree with Steve. I could have saved myself alot of grief by starting out with the right equipment. I think I can still use the #1's for rats. I am not sure what the #2's are good for, coyotes? We have a few. I did however make a deal with a fellow from T-man for some #1.5 coils. They are modified with three swivels, shock spring, longer chain, and D-ring in the center. They are dipped and waxed and rerady to go. $55/dozen. Ithought this sounded like a good deal. I also am buying a coon trapping book by Hawbaker from the same individual. By the time we get the gun deer hunters out of the woods next weekend and I get laid off, I am going to get everything in the ground or water and give it my best.

The #2 coils can indeed be used on yotes- and in water on drwoning wires, make a good rat  and coon trap
