The new turkey getter!
« on: April 15, 2010, 04:20:41 PM »
Well here is my new to me virgina smoothrifle.Built by Bobby Christain. Its a 62 cal with a 36" barrel, jug choked full by Danny Cawood. Going to the range with it tomarrow to shoot shot and ball down her. With the shorter barrel it sure handles sweet. Should be great in the woods.

Sweet, good luck finding a good load...

I sure wish I could use my little .40 caliber flintlock for turkeys...

Man that's pretty!  Makes me want to build one!  I'm anxious to hear how that choke effects loading, if it does...  :-\

i took it to the range and played a little. here is the target. Four balls in 1 hole, and i drew a turkey head? and took a shot at it. This was at 25 yds. Overall im very happy with the performance.  The choke did not effect loading at all.

Jug chokes are the way to go with a muzzleloader since it doesn't reduce the muzzle diameter and loads just like a cylinder bore. Taper chokes, whether fixed in the barrel or interchangeable tubes, can be a bit difficult to get wads past the constricted muzzle and impossible to load a tightly patched ball. The choke tubes can be removed for loading but that becomes a real pain, especially after you get a few powder granules in the choke tube threads.
A jug choke is a straight cylinder bore with a recess cut just behind the muzzle which allows the shot column to expand into the recess and then be choked back down to bore size. That may sound kinda funky but it works very well and they generally still shoot balls quite well.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.
