IMR4227 in .30 Carbine?
« on: March 25, 2010, 08:50:22 PM »
Anybody here use IMR4227 in an M1 .30 Carbine? I'm looking for a load that goes to about 1800fps with a 110 FMJ, and while the Sierra manual gives a load of 15gr, it fills the case just a little bit too much for me to feel comfortable with. Or should I stay with H110 and 2400 (and 296 when I can find it)?

Exactly why are you uncomfortable with a recommended load that fills the case?  In my opinion, that's a good thing.

The last info I had says W296 and H110 are the same.

I like IMR-4227 because it fills the case. No chance of a double charge.

For quite a few years I used 14.5 gr of IMR or H4227 under 110 gr bullets in the .30 Carbine.  Velocity was 1890 fps.  Somewhere around 14 gr should meet your requirements.  I would recommend a switch to H110 (this powder was developed for the .30 Carbine) and recommend working up to 15 gr with a 110 gr bullet.  This will duplicate factory velocities.  Powder volume is such there is no chance of an un noticed double charge.  Using Speer, Sierra or Hornady 110 gr bullets accuracy is excellent with that load.  Another good load is 15.5 gr of H110 under the Hornady 100 gr HJ.  Velocity runs 1950 fps and it makes a very good load out to 200 yards.  I've killed many a coyote with that load and 4 deer.

Thanks everybody. At least the 3 pounds of IMR4227 that I have won't go to waste. Now to go back to reloading!  ;D
