45-70 Trapper Handi-Rifle
« on: March 19, 2010, 04:34:26 PM »
I'm quite interested in the Trapper model 45-70 Handi-Rifle, sporting an 18.5 inch barrel. Nice and sweet, a compact carbine that looks good. Different anyway. I usually like things different.
Any one got one of these? Will the Bufalo Classic forend fit this, amking it appear as a Mannlicher? Velocity differnce compared to 22 incher? Thanks.

The forearms will fit, no problem, but at that length maybe consider the Cr-45 carbine and redo to the 454 or 460 on the other thread?

That would be a winner.  Just take a standard rifle to a gunsmith and have it cut, crowned and the sight moved back.  Shouldn't break the bank.

One nice thing about a Handi, you can find a smith anywhere who will do the job for a price you like and you don't hev to transfer the gun interstate.  Just mail the barrel.  Cheaper shipping than a whole gun just by virtue of the shorter, lighter box.  No transfer issues because you aren't shipping a gun.  Find a local guy, or find one on the internet, whatever works for you.

I haven't used Adco, but they were recommended to me by someone who has for a similar job.

Thanks for the responces. I do appreciate it.
I've got a regular Hand-Rifle 45-70 on order through my local dealer right now. It would be very nice to have a Trapper model with a Mannlicher stock, so this may be my next purchase.
I didn't see the Trapper barrels on the H&R1871 site. So, maybe an alternative is to either cut this new one, or have a new barrel one installed, and shorten that. So many options, so much enjoyment.
BTW My brother owns my first 45-70 Handi-Rifle, so I wanted to get a new one. I've also owned two others, both were 30-06's, but sold them off.

H&R don't make a shot barrel .45-70 as far as I know, 22" being the shortest. It is very easy to cut down and recrown one thou.

Quickdtoo,,,, I didn't see the TALO barrel on the H&R1871 site for their barrel program. Where can I get one then?

They're special order offerings on complete rifles, I doubt you'll ever see them as accessory barrels.

Thank you. I guess the best options are to buy a complete TALO rifle, or cut a long one down (or buy/trade another for one). Its on the future list.

I just picked up my Handi-Rifle 45-70 from my local dealer. This one is nice. It needs some cleaning and oiling before I shoot it.
Now, I need to order some cast bullets...
