Rebarreling Montana 1999 action?
« on: March 25, 2010, 06:42:23 AM »
Do any of you fellers know if the Montana 1999 action requires the barrel to have a clearance cut for the extractor? I believe it is patterned after the pre-64 M70 which I think does have a cut. I have rebarreled  several Model 700's and a Ruger or two but have no experience with this action. Is locating and doing the cut a tricky job?       Thanks alot. greer

I will guess you don't have the origional barrel to look at.  It probably would also depend on if you are chambering the barrel for a rimmed or rimless cartridge and what the origional was.  Larry

The fellow bought the action only and said he had a fully chambered Shilen barrel that needs the shoulder set back. He didn't know anything about an extractor cut. I'll call him and get a few more details. I guess I could call the Montana folks.  Thanks alot for the reply. greer

If it is for a rimmed cartridge then it most likely will need an extractor cut of some sort.  If it is rimless I would guess it would not be needed.  A look at the bolt head will probably tell you what you need to do with it.  Larry

FWIW, an inner collar ring on the Montana 1999 action, Mauser-derived, includes the extractor cut to eliminate the need for cone breeching or an extractor cut in the barrel extension.

Thanks for the reply. I passed on the job as I wasn't sure about what it involved. Sounds like it would have been a pretty much routine deal.  Thanks again for the help.  greer
