Possum :  I dont think so the lee looks like the pin and the expander are of the same piece where the rcbs is a screwed on ball type expander but thats what I am looking at in the catalog, never took a lee apart to see the insides. :D   JIM

I have both Lee and RCBS dies.  The pins are not enterchangable on what I have.  Both are as described by Jim above.

I called the local reloading supplier and he was under the impression that once the Lee decapper pin broke that was 'all she wrote'.  I am going to take it apart tomorrow and check it out.  Maybe a call to Lee and check to see if it is replacable.  If it is not then I am ordering a RCBS die - I know it is fixable for free.  Thanks guys for the input!

Decapper pins are available at midwayusa.com.  Try calling Lee to get a proper part number.  It should be listed with paperwork that came with your dies.

What caliber are you talking of?

Lee pistol dies use a straight decapper pin that fastens to a collet at the top of die, this allows the pin to slip upward if an obstruction is found (i.e. berdin primed case or a 9mm case in the bottom of a 44 mag etc).

The bottle neck decapper die has a swedge like shape that forms the inside of case neck for the bullet.  It still fastens with a collet at top of die.

Both type of decapper dies have a very substantial pin, but it is replacable.

I use mostly lee dies (except for large belted magnum calibers) and I do like this collet feature very much.   Lee dies are my preference, I like the quality and price.

Another 2 cents.

The RCBS pins are easily replaced for a good reason, they break frequently! I use a lot of RCBS, Lyman, and Lee dies. I've never broken a decapping pin on a Lee die, but I bet it's replacable under warranty.

jhm is correct.  I have RCBS and broke a pin.  I figured they would be generic . . . wrong.  The Lee pins were completely different.  Good thing the store clerk knew his stuff.  This is the only problem I have seen with the turret style presses.  If you leave the ram up and then rotate to another die, the decap pin doesnt look the same afterward .  It takes on the shape of an "L".

sorry guys. I have broked a 7 tcu decapping pin froma  lee die.  the decapping pin and rod are all one unit and you must pay to replace them. no other decapping rod will work with lee dies.
I have broken several RCBS pins normaly you have to buy them. they are cheep about $3 for 4 so it is no real big deal however on the 17 rem. die the rod and pin are one unit. i called RCBS and they had me a new one out with in 5 days at no charge to me.

LEE are good for the money just dont expect much if something goes wrong.

I took apart a set of rcbs dies for a 30-06 I have both the small base and the regular full length, well somewhere in the shop I have a decaping pin ball and stem cant locate well I could have just taken the stem and the works out of the small base dies and gotten by, but I called rcbs customer service dept. told them what a fool I was to misplace the parts, their responce was dont worry about it we will send out a new set up to go into your die no charge I explained I LOST THEM didnt matter they wanted to send them out, upon arriving package contained the needed parts and a package of decaping pins also a 6 pack of the moistured disc. that are suppose to stay in the set, I told her I had bought a couple sets that they were missing in.  All of this NO CHARGE TO THE CUSTOMER you cant be a better retailer than that I have used rcbs abt. 35 yrs and they are in my book the only reloading co. that I want to use. :D   JIM

Possum:  Double check those pins you are looking at, as it looks like they part # 90783 will only fit into the decapping die ONLY part # 90292 just something to look at b-4 you place your order. :D   JIM

Louis, I believe you made a wise choice with RCBS.  I've been using the same one for 25 years, probably 10's of thousands of rounds.  It has been literally through fire and flood and is still showing no signs of wear.

RCBS Pins

I had no idea this question would spawn such a good discussion.  Since I asked the question I have

1. Found out that RCBS backs their dies 1000%  If it breaks, even from stupid operator error, they fix it.

2. Lee will replace the decapper pin/stem assembly if you return the assembly to them.

3.An "L" shaped decapper pin does not work!

I am now buying RCBS dies since all I have to do is pick the phone up and in 3 days the part is here.  I still use the Lee dies, and they work, it's just a better replacement policy with RCBS.  Thanks guys for all the input.
