I have never tried doing it but have thought about. A lot of folks said it won't work because of the  eye relief. I have heard the distance from the eye is wrong for a rifle scope on a pistol. :-\ :-\ :-\

You might be safe with a .223, but I wouldn't try it on a .44 mag, .454, or .500 unless you want one of those half moon cuts above your eye! Not enough eye relief . Burris makes a 4x12 hand gun scope and it's shorter than most rifle scopes.

You'll have to shoot with your eye only 2-3 inches from the scope.  A true pistol scope has a lot more relief - probably more than a foot.  I have two scoped Contenders (Leupold and Burris) and I shoot them with my arms fully extended.

I saw a picture once of a girl shooting a contender with a rifle scope. the mount was special made and over a foot high.  she held the scope to her eye with her left hand and fired with her right hand.

The .223 may be OK but may not. Get the longest eye relief rifle scope you can afford if you do. Depending on how you hold it and what loads you use and how strong you are you might or might not get by with it. Expect to be kissed on the eye with it from time to time.

I've done it with long eye relief Leupold scopes but the scope makes contact with my forehead on most every shot with 50 grain bullets. The .223 is right at the ragged edge most can get by with and get tapped only lightly. Go heavier and the tap isn't light but might get bloody.

I tried one on a .222 barrel and never got hit in the face. The problem was that it was always close and the more I shot it the more nervous I got. It wasn`t on there long.

I've done this using a Tasco 8-32X on my XP's, I use a bipod and sandbag the rear grip. This is shooting from a bench. I get the crosshair on target with my eye close to the scope and adjust the sandbags to hold the scope on target. Then I back off to normal pistol distance, looking thru the scope you'll see a small circle of light, there will be the target & crosshairs and you're ready to shoot.

I use this a lot when dialing loads for T/C's and XP's, I have a 10X Burris EER, don't really use it much since I tried this method.

Ernie, xphunter here, enlightened me to this approach, dude knows a thing or 2 about long-range pistol work.

I know a guy who uses intermediate, scout type long eye relief rifle scopes on his Contenders.  Works for him, but since most scout type scopes are low to medium power, I don't see the advantage over a higher power pistol scope.
