What equpiment do you shoot and why?
« on: January 10, 2010, 10:11:18 AM »
Not a new topic here, but it is a new year and I wanted to poll the audience to see what you shoot/like/dislike. What would you like to try out this year?

I will start:

Parker Hunter-Mag (305 IBO, 280 actual with my setup)
GT Hunter XT Carbon arrows with 3" fletchings (340gr total w/head)
Rage two blade, G5 Montec Steel Broadheads, Thunderheads, Muzzy three blade and Spitfire expandables. (ALL 100gr)
Limbsaver dampers and string silencers
Tru-Fire release
Tru-Peep
Cobra 4 pin C-583 sight
Hostage arrow rest (AWESOME-Black)
Bohning 4 arrow quiver/mount
Winner's Choice string/cables

I am looking at new bows this year but find it very hard to part with the Parker. It's been awesome. I have done the "Robin Hood" thing a total of seven times at 25 yards. It wrecks arrows, but funny everytime! I am looking at Ross, PSE, Martin, Bowtech and of course, Parker. Man, prices have jumped!

Longbows, recurves, and self bows; all in the 55 - 60# @ 28" range; arrows of cedar, aluminum, carbon; mostly cut on impact 2 or 3 blade broadheads--Zwickeys, Snuffers--125 Grain to 160 Grain.

I shoot 'em because I like 'em...and they work!

This year I will try out my new Osage self bow from a bowyer friend who lives in New Mexico.  I will use it for hogs (if we go) and whitetails.

Why not restring the parker and stick with it?

I shoot a Matthews legacy. It's an older bow but I shoot it really well and just get it restrung every few years.

Reasons for keeping it:
#1- I shoot it well
#2- very quiet without having to add string silencers or limb dampeners
#3- I shoot it well

You get the idea.

Ha ha! Good point on the re-string. I do shoot it well, it fits me well and I really love it. I just figured a shorter axle to axle length would benefit me in the stand.   I duno. I guess that is why I started this post! Poll for opinions.

Thanks!

Howard Hill "Red Man" longbow, cedar arrows w/Hill broad heads. I fell in love with archery long before the compound bow. Three of my brothers hunt w/compounds and they never tried to get me to convert because they  knew they would be wasting their time. Archery/bow hunting, is a great sport regardless of preference of equipment. Good shooting and good hunting.

Those are nice shots. Here's why I am afraid to trade up on my Parker. The first one is a nice Robin Hood...look closely..and the second one is with a new set of Gold Tip Hunter XT arrows. 350 total grains. Notice the penetration in the layered target. These pics were both at 25 yards.

I am hitting the Sportsman's Show this weekend in Syracuse and I am going to try some new bows...I hope I get the same results!

Mathews DXT 60 LBS, 28" Draw Length - I love it, it is lifetime guaranteed, compact for tight trees.
Rip Cord Arrow Rest - Fully captured arrow at full draw or with arrow knocked.
G5 Sights - Rugged, lifetime guaranteed,
G5 Peep - metal.
Limb Saver Stabilizer ( Shorty )- cheap and works great.
Carbon Force Radial X-Weave Arrows ( 300's ) 28.5" long - when it comes to arrows you get what you pay for in most cases, and these are cheap. I'm thinking real hard about going to Carbon Expresses new Mayhem Hunter.

Here is a pic of what I did last night with my DXT. This was at thirty yards with Carbon Force Radial X-Weave 300's 28.5 long. It's not the greatest but not bad either.

Whisker Biscuit- Absolutely forgiving yet simple rest!!
Cobra sight-Bright.....Always.
Jim Fletcher release- Smooth & slick

Martin Chetah set at 64lb & 28.5" draw
Beeman ICS hunter arrows
Muzzy 75gr 3 blade (switching to 100gr this year)
Trophy Taker enclosed rest
Truglow micro with Tritium fiber optic pins 20, 30, 40, 50 & 60 yard pins
Release aid (cant remember the brand, the info is worn off after about 12 years ???)
3 arrow quickie quiver
Limb saver string leaches, and stabelizer and limb savers

the bow feels right and shoots very good. Consistent 3-4" groups at 60 yards, and thats my fault not the bow. My wife can hold -2" groups at 60 yards. Inside of 40 yards any groups over 1-1/2" is unacceptable for me. And my wife tells me I cant shoot just because I cant out shoot her marked or unmarked yardage.

I have a Hoyt Magnatec the wife bought me in 2001. I use Easton Carbon Arrows 340, and 100 gr. Slick Tricks. I would love to have a new one, but just don't want to part with the money for a new one right now. I don't know, when I get home from Iraq, I may break down and buy one.

I'm shooting a Martin Cheetah, Alpine 5-arrow quiver, Cobra Sidewinder 5-pin sight, QAD Ultra Hunter LD rest, Tru-Ball Short-n-Sweet wrist release and Nitro Stinger arrows.

I'm extremely happy with this bow's performance, as it consistantly shoots 3" groups at 50 yards...with field tips and broadheads. 8)

I use fixed blade broadheads for large game, like Slick Trick Razor Trick and Fuse Banshee. Wide cutting diameter mechanicals (various brands) for turkeys, geese, ducks, pheasants and groundhogs.

The why I shoot the above is easy:

I have changed my set up totally from the CX Carbons, and do not shoot CX anything any longer.  I have switched back over to Easton XX78's in 2413 and 2315 shafts with a 145 gr FP for practice and most likely will use a BH that weighs 150 gr with these.  I also shoot Easton Axis FMJ 340's with a 125 gr FP.  My Mathews Drenalin is turned down from the 70# that it was to 58# as I like it much better.  Both the aluminum and FMJ shafts because of their weight offer a much quieter arrow flight that are just flat out hitting much harder with the extra weight.

Sight change was to the G5 Optix XR with the peep change out to the G5 Meta hunter peep.
