New to forum. New to H&R rifles
« on: October 11, 2009, 12:51:46 AM »
Giday all.
Jack from Queensland Australia here. l'm new to this forum and new to H&R handi rifles.
l have just brought a second hand H&R. lt comes with 204R, 223, 243, and 50cal blackpowder barrels. l like the concept of the rifle and hope it will serve me well. Looking forward to learning how to get it grouping tight and then getting it out into the padock. l will mainly be using the 204 barrel while hunting dingo's here. So will be chasing up some load advice on this cal in these rifles. And what projectile work in these barrels.
l dont expect to see the rifle for a few month (exporting from the states will take a while). But look forward to learning about these rifles and getting to know a few of you in the mean time.

Some pic's of my new toy

Cheers from Oz
Jack

Welcome Jack. You are in for a "ton of fun" with your new addiction. There are some great people on this forum. Tim will be along soon to tell you to check out the FAQ'S. There are priceless bits of good stuff in there. I know the wait will be worth it when you get those HANDIES. In the mean time just enjoy this web site until they arrive. Good shooting to you my friend.

It's really good to have you here, Jack.  Welcome ;D

I gotta agree on the .45-70 as your next barrel.  I believe it would take the nasty buffs you have Down Under.  It certainly takes and has taken lots of our bear and bison.  Our buffs are not half as mean as your critter.  With a single shot, you'd have to break him down with the first shot, or be up a stout tree :o :o

I hope you get your package soon.  Good shooting and hunting.

Pete

Welcome aboard Jack, and you have a nice collection there already.  This is what I love about the Handi Rifles, and that is why I came back to them myself and that is the barrel program.

Now I just got to find me a one eyed dog, to go with my single shot rifle  ::)

Welcome Jack,

You will not find a better source for information about handi rifles than this forum. I think the factory cals Tim when they can't figure something out.  ;D

Great looking combo you have on the way. Look forward to hearing some hunting reports.

Let us know how they work on the range as well.

Just spoke with the previous owner in the states. He told me the 204 barrel is a flutted barrel  8) l didnt know that from the pic l had.
He said he only used the 32gn projectiles in it and not loaded hot for best groups.
How do these barrels with the twist rate they have, go with 39 or 40gn projectiles  ???
Cheers from Oz

G'day Jack:

I am a Melbourne lad living in Missouri, been in the U.S since 1981. Joined the GBO forum in 2008. You will find this forum more like a group of mates you have known for ages, rather than the more common "all business" shooting forums that are about the web.

I have been researching the similarities and difference between dingoes/wild dogs and coyotes for about 4 years, with the help of wild dog researcher Dr. Lee Allen in Toowoomba. I have developed a systematic shooting concept that I plan to try on coyotes here in northern Missouri, and hopefully go back for a vacation and try it over there with clusters of sheep stations that Dr. Allen will introduce me to. I was researching coyote hunting when I came a cross the dingo/wild dog problem in Qld, I had no idea how bad it was.

I was surprised to find out that calling dingos/wild dogs had just got started recently, when it has been THE way to hunt them here for years.

Are you in a shire that has a bounty? If so, how much. I have been assembling a spreadsheet of all Qld shires and their dingo/wild dog bounties.

Do you plan to hunt day, night or both?

Just a few questions. Welcome and good luck helping the farmers and native fauna out. I may retire down your way in a few years and shoot dingoes and dogs full-time for bounty.

Welcome, Jack. Ditto to what the others have stated. You'll find alot of good people here who have much experience with Handis and don't mind sharing it. I especially like the fact that everyone here seems to check their egos at the door and are really interested in helping others. BTW that's a great looking Handi you've got there.

Hello Jack and welcome aboard.  While I am no longer into having multiple barrels for my Handi's I do love my Handi's.  Especially my 30-06.  I carry it almost constantly.  I live in Alaska and am retired.  During the winter I go out daily on snow machine and look for wolves or anything else with fur.  The 30-06 does fine out to 700 yards.  I've done nothing to this gun except put scopes on it.  Took it out of the box and started shooting.  The more I shoot it the better it gets.  Also carry a .223 Ultra, it's good out to 500 yards.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Well.............. After all this waiting the rifle finally turned up in Oz  ;D  A little mucking around with customs, finally have it and others l picked up from the states home.
Got a set of rings and mounted an old Bushnell Banner (B&L made) l had on the shelf onto the 204 barrel.

l will have some brass and 39gn Sierra's here next week. Now the fun begins  :)

Love the 50cal barrel  8)

l will have to get the muzzle loader sorted also. Looks like it will be so much fun.
Could someone point me in the right direction for caps info on the black powder side of things. l'm not sure what l need to do to get this barrel happening  ???  There doesn't appear to be anything there for the caps??
Cheers from Oz

Ozzy,

WOW, 6 months waiting for your gun & barrels.  I wish I had your patience.  Very nice looking set.

For the BP barrel I believe they use plastic primer carriers to hold a 209 shotgun primer in place.  I think you can buy them from H&R.  I would put a post on the H&R/NEF sidekick-huntsman forum and you should get a lot of help with your muzzleloader.

I think your 204 is going to be real trouble for the Dingos.

Good luck and have fun with your new addiction.

BB

A fine set, most of us here would probably have been thrilled to start with such. I especially like that fluted long barrel.
Are you familar with the British Militaria Forums, there a quite a few from Oz and NZ on board that would be good to know.
