Wolf Primers
« on: March 30, 2010, 06:21:03 PM »
I've seen Wolf brand primers available for about $25/1000 in a few places.  Has anyone tried these?  If so, are they worth fooling with or should I hold out and get Winchesters like I normally do?

Clem ,

I have been using them for a while and all is well . Quite consistant and I'm not the only one using them , a buddy jumped on a brick the same time i was ordering , I have also heard reports of pistol competitors using them alot with good results.

I never have used them but I would like to give them a try. I have only heard good things about the primer themselves. Some complaints about packaging, is something that needs improved.

I hope so, I have 5K of them + 4K large pistol + 3K large rifle. I was going to buy some small pistol, but I scored on 5K of CCI 500's. I bought the Wolf primers, when I could not get anything else. So far, I have not run into a problem. I have not shot enough of them to know about how much the small rifle primers are going to effect my accuracy. I am working on a 22 BR right now, but have only shot beginning loads so far, to zero in the scope and to make sure nothing is going to be bad. No misfires or upside down anvils or other "bad" things so far. I have a good feeling about them, but the proof is in the shooting.

I have gone thru about 6k of the Wolf small pistol primers. Can't tell the difference between those and the Winchester primers I normally use.

Many high power teems are using them. Many bench rest people are also that I know. They are a very consistent primer. Be careful when seating them. The cups are a little hard and the anvil sticks up a bit more than others. Make sure that you really get the primer bottomed out in the cup. The Small rifle and Mag Small rifle are supposed to have the same amount of priming mix in them but the Mag SR has a thicker primer cup and these are suggested for use in rifles like the AR's that have free floating firing pins. I have a friend that had some doubles while using the standard small rifle primer in his AR.

I bought a couple of bricks of Wolf large pistol several months ago.  So far, so good.    I use them in my .45 ACP and my .44 spc/mag rounds.  They light up large charges of 2400 and small charges of Bullseye just fine.

I hate to be the negitive guy here but my expereince is a bit differnt then the rest of you. I bought 4 cases of them two years ago. A lp sp lr and lpmag. the rilfe primers worked well. The small pistol worked well other then some misfires in my ppc gun but that gun about needs fed primers to work anyway so that wasnt a suprise. The large pistol standards were lame. They worked with small charges of bullseye but gave wide velocity swings and even squibs with any other powders. Chronograph readings were off as much as 200 fps from other primers so i came to the conclusion that they were very week primers. To add insult to injury there were maybe two or three primers per brick that didnt even have anvils on them. Then we switched to the lg mags. These are not mag primers! Velocitys ran about the same as fed stardards which are mild primers themselves. The mags worked well though with about any powders other then the slow balls like aa9 110 ect. I ended up giving away a bunch of the standards as i was worried about having a squib in my gun and bursting a barrel. the mags i just used up as standard pistol primers in relvolvers. Personaly i wouldnt buy another one unless it was the only primer i could find and then it would never go in one of my 1911s or any other semi auto pistol.

Lloyd,
Always appreciate your input. Your experience with these primers is much more extensive than mine. My centerfire pistol loading with these primers (sp) has so far been limited to Bullseye and Promo powders. Both flake powders and easy to ignite. The only ones I've chronographed have been the .40 and 9mm. The SD was around 50 with both, which is acceptable for my USPSA and IDPA loads. Thanks for the heads up on the missing anvils in your LP primers. I'll need to start doing a good visual inspection on those before I load my primer feeders. I've still got about 5-6k of the Wolf LP primers I'm hoping to use. Bought 15k a while back when I couldn't get anything else. I still have a couple cases of the Winchester primers squirreled back if I have problems with the Wolf. I've also got around 8-9 hundred .45acp loaded with the Wolf LP primers & BE powder. I'll break out the old chrono and check those out. It will be interesting to see how they run.
