I wonder which Mauser I have !
« on: April 27, 2010, 02:12:54 PM »
Hi, I have a Mauser rifle which I have been trying to identify by reading on the Internet. It has a sporterized stock with a shadow line cheekpiece and checkering on the pistol grip only none on the forearm. 8MM JS stamped on the barrel, double set triggers .no serial number I can see( haven,t removed the stock)rear sight has a folding leaf in addition to the regular sight. Bolt has the third lug at the rear. very light scroll on the reciever sides and on top of the reciever ring, the horn buttplate has the number 662 scratched on the inside of it.the rifle has been drilled and tapped for wweaver type bases and rifle has a safety that is on the rear of the shroud and on the right side and swings up and down. the rifle only weighs a tad more than 6 1/2 pounds !  the reciever screws are about 7 7/8 between the centers.barrel length just a tad over 23 1/2 inches long.barrel is floated at the end and extreemly trim but no shnabel . screws for the reciever have scribes in them almost as if they were cut with a file for ornamentation very well executed . same thing on the screws that hold the buttplate on.stock is executed very well but the wood appears a little soft (can scratch it with a fingernail) as soon as I get pics figured out i will post ! shoots decent ( 2 inch 3 shot groups at a hundred with a long tube leupold 4x) with a 150 grain Sierra and either 47 or 49 grains of H-4895 with not experimentation of seating length.just set it at 3 inches so far. I cant believe how light this is for a Large ring Mauser (and i guess it is because of the reciever screw gap. any edgumicated guesses without a pic? Thanks,Craig

Sounds like a commercial mauser. Pics would be alot of help.

Hi,I forgot to mention that the rifle has the stripper clip cutout on the left side of the reciever and has what appears to be some kind of bird (eagle?)on the right side of the reciever ring and some kind of unidentifyable mark(tiny box of some sort) directly under that. I looked at this under a magnafying glass .on top of the reciever ring under the scope base there appears to bethe outline of  a place where there was some type of insignia but was stippled over. I assume this is what they are talking about when they say a gun has been scrubbed ? as i said what really jumps out at ya is the light weight. about the same weight as a Win 94 or bout 6 1/2 pounds ! I was wondering if there is a type of Mauser that is normally this light.I am going to learn how to post pics soon and will get pics up but they will be taken with a cell phone camera so probably wont be that good anyway. Thanks,Craig

Could easily be a "cigarette" rifle, which is a German-made sporterized version, done up after WW2, to trade/sell to GI's. I think the DST's and the horn buttplate might indicate that...but...the "eagle" you mention is the Nazi Party stamp, and I would think that would have been polished off...so probably a surplus or war trophy sporterized in U.S. It would be a '98 model. You might consider removing the scope mounts to see if there are any marking under them. And, if you haven't done it yet, maybe remove the action from the stock to see if there are any markings hidden.
What does the bottom metal look like??? Hinged floor plate?? European type lever to release floor plate??
Also, you might try some Norma ammo, which is loaded quite a bit hotter then U.S. made ammo. Since your rifle is clearly marked 8mmJS, it is intended for the larger bore 8mm ammo, not the smaller 8X57J, and perhaps the hotter ammo might shoot a bit better. But then again, your is fine for deer, or whatever, out to 300 yards or so.

Hi,yes the bitd looks like the one in the pic but it is on the right side of the reciever ring. the bottom metal has a little lite scrool work about a nickel size in diameter and to open it I can depress a recessed button with a catridge and the the floor plate slides forward torward the muzzle end of the rifle and opens.

bcraig:  get some Sellier and Bellot ammo, or PRVI ammo.  Both are made to original specs and are nowhere as costly as the Norma, which is also to original spec.

That sounds like someone did a little chicken scratchin'   ;)   on the military floorplate.

The floorplate release, as you've described, in normal military Mauser SOP.

Hi,i finally got this pics thing figured out(sorta I think !) Please uxcuse the poor quality of the pics as they are the best I can do with my camera phone.Maybe there will be one or two that will help with the identifacation.
can anyone recomend an Inexpensive camera that would be good for these types of pics? you know showing close up identafying marks and such and also might be good for wildlife pics(mostly pics of deer ) obviously I am not a photographer and am not looking to be a pro just able to share some of what I see with others. Thanks,Craig

You have what appears to be a large ring 1898 Mauser 98 that's been sporterized from it's military config via restocking, and adding adjustable sights and sling swivel bases, besides later D/T'ing the receiver rings for scope mount bases and altering the bolt handle to clear a mounted scope.

It's for sure a Large Ring M98, but since your pics of the front ring are unclear to me, the best way to tell a Small Ring from a Large Ring is to look at the left side receiver wall, just where the front receiver ring abuts it.
If the front ring is larger/fatter & stands out from the left sidewall, it's a Large Ring M98 - if the front receiver ring us flush with the sidewall, it's a Small Ring M98.

Many folks sporterizing military rifles were desireous of a light/handy rifle, and so chose lightweight accessories, like open sights and selected lightweight wood - sometimes even hollowing out/drilling the hidden areas of the stock wood to reduce weight.
I used to utilize an electric drill/bit on mine, ILO aluminum bottom metal,  to "swiss cheese" the metal sides of the magazine well in order to lose a few more ounces.
It was only much later that users had these lightweight sporters converted yet again for scope use - D/T'ing, bolt handle work, etc, etc.

The eagle, etc are German proof marks.

Judging by what I can see,it appears to have a shotgun trigger guard. This may be was is refered to as a guild gun. These were built by people as they apprenticed to the master builder from what ever shop it was made at. It also could be what was referred to as a Cigarette mauser. These were built for servicemen after the war for cigarettes and what ever else they could get. Without clearer pics, this would be my best guess.

The front receiver ring has what appears to be some kind of discoloration.  It is either a scrubbed crest which I don't think is the case or the area was annealed to drill and tap.  The annealing if that is the case could definitely weaken the ring.  I have never had to anneal Mauser receivers to drill and tap as it is usually unnecessary.  I would try to have that area checked with a hardness tester to be on the safe side.
