TOOK A SMALL ROAD TRIP
« on: April 04, 2010, 02:22:34 AM »
Now boys and girls this is going to require an atlas too get the full value of the conversation.
The Hen and I took a ride yesterday--not a big one---left at at 10AM and got home about 4PM.
Left Deer Park, Texas, By GOD and drove to Ray-wood, Hull/Daisetta, Batson, Saratoga, Honey Island, Thicket, Votaw, Rye, Moss Hill, Hardin and then home.
Folks, this is part of the Big Thcket---which is a whole nother conversation--the Piney woods and Dogwoods.
The Dogwoods are in full, glorious bloom, They were beautiful and the Big Thicket was gorgous---You have to be in it to determine that a Thicket can be gorgous.
It was a good drive---top down--84 degrees and lots of sun.
Blessings
TEXAS, by GOD

William,

If we ever loose sight of the Glory of God as exhibited by the blossoming of trees and flowers, we are doomed.  Spring has sprung in the deep South too.  The birds know it, the trees and flowers know it, I know it.  I can see it, feel it, touch it and APPRECIATE IT.  Good post.  Happy Easter...

Glad you had a good trip. I've never been to the Thicket. It's a long way from here but it's something I would like to see. We took a road trip Friday down to Midland, 260 miles or so round trip. Things are greening up nicely down off the cap. Yesterday we rode over to Lubbock with our daughter, about a 230 mile trip after running all over town. Saw some green wheat and a lot of plowed fields. Planting will kick off in two or three weeks. We are leaving in a few minutes heading to Logan, NM, another 200 + mile trip. Ute Lake is located west of there and I have never fished it. I want to check it out and fish it in May.

How small was that road?  Just kidding.  Our spring got rolling real nicely last month, but lately it has taken a little time-out.  We've been getting a nasty little string of storms from the Gulf of Alaska and it feels more like January.  There was even some fresh snow up in the mountains.

However, the hummingbirds have arrived; boy, they must be a little shocked.  I hope they brought their little overcoats with them.

Due to the chemo/radiation treatments our travels will be rather short for at least the next two months, then………..?  We do plan to make a few short trips down to Brady, Mason, Llano, Fredericksburg, Johnson City, Lampasas then back to Abilene for the wildflower tour.   It’s a beautiful drive when the Bluebonnets are in bloom.  There is also a spot along the Llano River where one can see nesting pairs of the American eagle, that’s quite a site to see.

Anyone ever hunt for Topaz in the Mason area?  I have spent a lot of time looking, never found a piece of Topaz but picked up a hip pocket full of arrow and spear points.

My wife's oldest brother lives close to Ovalo south of Abilene. We did the wildflower thing a couple of years ago. Lots of beautiful flowers in that area. We made it over to Santa Anna about lunch time and had BBQ at the Smoking Gun. It was a weekday and we were the only people in the joint.

When dad retired my folks moved to the Ozarks.  Dad had a heart attack coming out to see us.  We all got to Albuquerque before the surgery and saw Him and mom.  He didn't make it.  Dad never thought much of organised religion but was always going to church as the easiest way to help others.  Mostly he believed in God and his fellow man, but not buildings and institutions.  When dad had been cremated there by the hospital, mom sent us home telling us to dad would want us to go home and be with our kids not at a funeral.  The church they went to asked mom what they could do for dad in a funeral service.  Mom, being a child of the depression, told them flowers were too expensive and any one who wanted to could donate money to the youth fund and maybe bring a branch of dogwood.  I have pictures of that church that look like a dogwood orchard in full bloom.  My still living godfather showed up in full Marine dress blues (Carlsons Raiders) and walked mom into the church.  He later told me that the dogwood perfume was overwhelming and the people there treated my mother and himself as if they were royalty.

I love this conutry.  Small towns make such a BIG difference.  What a wonderful story.  Now I am all teary-eyed with Patriotism and Good Will.  Lunch is going to go down hard today after that.  Thanks!
