I know this is comparing apples to oranges, but, from my experience with both of my H&R model 686's, 10", and 12" barrel.
You may find that shooting off hand is a bit uncomfortable. They are just to muzzle heavy for me.
I love both of them, and both shoot very well from a rest.
Freehand, at least for me, is a whole different story.
I have no experience with the Ruger though, so it's balance may be excellent.
Just wanted to give you my 2 pennies worth about my H&R's.
