peep sight help

looking to get a peep sight for my top eject win 94 ive been looking at the williams 5D and the FP or the lyman 66a they all get about the same review on midway so which would you chose. also do i have to get a new front sight?

I've had to replace the front sights with a slightly higher sight on my non-Trapper M94's ( with the front sight mounted directly in a barrel dovetail ILO on a ramp) - but I took it as an oportunity to also change the front sight to a bead type more to my liking ( Ivory/Gold//FiberOptic/etc).

I usually mount a Williams 5D, since it's a "set-n-forget" sight, where one load is generally used at a single sight setting like for general hunting.

The FP and the Lyman both are easily/micrometer adjustable for W/E, for those who want/need to be constantly readjusting their sights - a better bet for certain types of shooting, like silly-wets.

The Williams sights have always been made from a very strong aircraft aluminum, with vintage Lymans of steel - but no longer.  the latest Lymans are now also aluminum.

They will all accept various sized apertures, and can all be used as a "ghost ring" peep by shooting with the aperture removed - so the answer is much like asking your preference in dance partners (It's YOUR choice)

I put the Lyman 66A on my 94 and I like it a lot, click adjustable, and I did not have to do anything with the front sight, it has the same one that came on it, with the little silver bead on the ramp front. I knocked out the barrel sight and put a plug in it after I mounted the peep sight, I used the barrel sight to sight in the peep to get it close. There is a little screw that comes with the Lyman 66 that goes down through the top of the sight that is used to help find where your height was if you decide to take off the peep and put it back on for cleaning (the sight can be removed from the mount with a push of a button) I would advise to take that little screw out and put it in the box till you need it.

I had a Lyman 66 on my Model 94 for over 30 years. Worked great until I could focus on the front sight anymore. So I switched to a tang sight. I still have a Lyman 66 on my Model 92, because it has a 24" barrel and I can pretty much still see it, but the tang is coming for that one eventually.

I  tried a tang on a Marlin for about 2 shots and took it off. Couldn't get over the idea it was gonna hit me in the eyeball.

do you have to change your grip when you have a tang sight? i think im gonna go with the 5D since i usually just chose one load and stick with that. i plan on doing most of my hunting this year with the .30-30 can't wait for deer season

Had two Lyman peeps and at first was impressed until I got a Marble.  The Marble is rock solid and doesn't wobble like the Lyman sights.  Also, it's adjustable for windage, unlike the Lyman peep sight.

I've got an EMF Hartford that I had my gunsmith mount a Lyman 66A on.  I've had this aluminum sight on a couple of other leverguns, and I've found that there's fore-and-aft play in the part that the arperture screws into. Lyman says, over the phone, that that's the way they're supposed to be.  I don't really care for floppy sights on a levergun.  I'll either switch mine out for a Williams FP, or try one of the new Marble's rear sights that come with a peep arperture.  I use receiver sights on nearly all of my leverguns.  Unless I find an old steel Lyman, I'm done with Lyman's newer, aluminum receiver sights. From now on any receiver sight that I buy will be a Williams.
