touch hole size
« on: April 02, 2010, 12:34:51 PM »
So I received my .30 caliber Mountain Howitzer, bored over to fire #0 buckshot (thanks Brooks!). The touch hole seems to be ~.090" and all I have is 1/8" fuse. Would it be OK to drill it out to 1/8"? Or should I find some other fuse material?

Oh... and note the fine period carriage I put together!   :) .... wait.... images coming.

Won't hurt you drill it out, but that small a cannon you don't want get that much bigger.

Find some fuse that fits.  A bigger hole will let more of the bang out the back.

prime it with ffffg and use a linstock
the smaller vent the better at cannons that size

whats the diameter for a number 0 buckshot ??  3/8 or ??

if you had a cannon with a 3" bore , would you like to have a 1" vent on that one ??
the proportions would be the same
so it will give you a little idea of whats happening

there is 1 millimeter fuse available

I only have fffg and don't own a linstock. Guess I won't be firing this little baby before Mrs. Grymster comes home and puts me to work!  :'(  I'm real busy for the next couple of weeks too. After that I should have time to build the sorta naval/utility carriage I have planned and get together the proper stuff for shooting.

By that logic I'd already have a 27/32 vent on my 3" bore cannon (0 buckshot is .320") .... but yeah, I get what you're saying. I'm going to take Doulbe D's advice and buy some fuse from cannonfuse.com. I'll tell them where I heard about them.

Oh... and while I have you fellers' attention; when I make the capsquares, should they snug right down on the trunnions? Or is there a formula for allowing some play?

The barrel should move freely without binding, but no slop.

on a small gun I would drill the touchhole to @ .085 -.092 and use the smaller standard fuse size .

Tracy gave me some 'stick fuse' it is very thin green and somewhat brittle and stiff very small dia . It is great fuse .

But I've had it with "nogobooms" , IMHO bigger is better as far as hole size within reason .

+1 on the Cannon fuse guy ,I met him at the shoot and he is the kinda guy I'd like to support .

Yes I did and it's very nice!

Not sure how I'll form mine yet. Maybe two milled, wire or waterjet cut dies in a lightly clamped sandwich between a couple of plates. Then form in a vice.

I do! A friend is a machine tool salesman who was an applications guy before that. He has connections in a lot of shops. The sad part is I manage a manufacturing facility with some of the finest machine tools money can buy, but I can't touch them any more.  :'( I spec them out, negotiate the price and sign off on the purchase, but run them I can't!

Grymstr,

Somehow, we must have missed including our "safety and info" sheet. It would have sent you to www.cannonfuse.com for their 2.2mm fuse for the .092 fuse hole on your barrel. I will get a copy to you.

Sounds like a union problem.  You can't even sneak in a G job?

Well, there's the union problem and at least one other. No G-jobs! >:( I used to run this equipment and I find it hard to not be able to touch it! It's OK; I'll be setting up with benchtop lathe and mill and I was recently invited to teach at a community college, which will have laser, CNC milling, turning and routing. Wire EDM would be nice, but I think I can manage.

When you don't have spurtle, what else do can you do but add sugar for flavor?

Dan , I'm glad you cleared that sludge comment up as I has no clue what Tom was talking about . I could read the headlines (intended slur) OK , but the fine print (the jist) was too small ...way too .

So now I am going to depend on Dan in Sweeden to translate Tom in jolly ol England's words ..... ?

Tom , you do think in English right ?  I'm just asking that all ..... ;D ;D

I'm going with Dans idea except for Baileys in the coffee . whipped cream ...and cherry on top .

Brown sugar sounds like a bonus !  ;D

Where did I put he brown sugar ?  8)

Lime salt in beer will have to do till tomorrow . :D

Tact and Diplomacy are my motto.  First , I grind beans (Sumatra or Java) and make real coffee every day...facing the dragon without her coffee is dicing with death. I claim to know some about the oil pan residue therefore. I have this little picture in my head of a Scottish gentleman driving away from the Docks in Boston in his wagon loaded with cases of free tea.....shaking his head and thinking.."Dumb Yanks , what a waste. " As for the Colorado Muskrat , aka Rockylock , this man was only recently promoting some horrendous gloop from Mehico , a Tequila Liqueur for Gawd's sake , a Bandido in a blushing Pink Sombrero. We Scots may have had the odd minor disagreement with our English cousins over the years but we did not resort to drinking Mississippi Mud.You don't have to learn to like tea.
