600 lever action round
« on: March 06, 2010, 12:22:50 PM »
I am trying to figure out if  round can be made in 60 caliber for one of the  modern steel large frame Wincester lever actions like the model 71 . I have one in 50-110. My question is can  I blow out a 50-110 case to hold a 60 caliber round ?  Has any one else made a short 60 caliber case  that  LOADED the round is  a Max oal of 2.75 maybe 2.8 ? Could the 600 nitro be shortened and would that be bettter ?  I believe that is also a straight case ?  Also how hard is it to get 60 caliber rifle barrels and where might a good source be ?  My Lever action Gunsmith was not sure you can legaly get them but I reminded him they are making the 600 over kill and even the 700 here so the barrels are available .Thank you . my direct email is willsanders@earthlink.net

Sorry, 50 is about as big as it will handle. The rim on a 600ne is about as wide as the action on the rifle. But a 50-110 with modern brass and smokeless powder is no slouch anyhow!

Thanks , I agree on the 50-110 as I have one . The 60 is just an idea , if it can be done I woud not mind trying it . My Gunsmith thinks a 50-110 case can be blown out or , I think he mentioned another round as well that may work , I think he said a 577 Snyder .

Snyder wont work and the 6o does not leave e nough steel for a high power load so I am thining of 55 caliber , a short 550 magnum or again using the 50-110 case but then the claiber may be larger than the base !

Doesnt that require the whole tax stamp thing? I thought the largest you could do was 50 without it being a "destructive device",or are you not in the US?

I'm thinking over 50 is a destructive device and you have to get a tax stamp. Hubel gets away with his monster guns because they are rifled shotguns.

Nope. ATF exempts sporting rounds. You can check with them and get a ruling on their website.

What about making a 20 ga rifle.
Use brass shells and load the bullets out.
Not sure if they will fit width wise.
But I think this is what you were intending to make.

Ya know, if you had to have a big lever gun there is always the 70-150. Start with a Winchester 1887 12 guage, fit it with a rifled barrel, and make cases from brass 12ga. shells. Why they didn't just leave it straight at 73 caliber I'll never know but it does work and is big. I think one of those would be a lot of fun for close up hunting in tight woods. Plus you get to look like the Terminator.

The 70-150 would work with an 1887 action.
Could also be necked to .600
