Plants are started and then.......
« on: April 08, 2010, 02:33:02 PM »
Just started my tomatos and pepper plants (from seed) last weekend.  Most are up or at least started and today I wake up to snow.  Now I live in the U.P and snow is no stranger here in April, heck even in May some years.  But it just ain't right for it to snow after I have started my plants.  Nope, just ain't right.

Heehee, yep got that right. I love the UP, but love the Rocky Mts a little more, so where I live. But the weather similarities are there. Hard to make gardening plans in the spring...And they say the glaciers are melting in northern Montana. Donno about that.

I had fresh green onions with supper tonight. I'd like to stick some tomato and pepper plants in the ground but I'm just not that convinced the last frost/freeze is behind us yet.

Supposed to drop to around 40 tonight and a bit lower tomorrow night. They say no frost likely but it can at that's temps. Hopefully this will be winter's last shot at us but until April ends I'm never confident of it. I've lost too many crops to a late frost/freeze in the last few years to feel comfortable until May arrives.

In a town a little ways away they have a big sign that says...."PRAY FOR GLOBAL WARMING".  Might think about it.......

hey guys,
Im down in south La., like 19 miles from th end of the road and the Gulf..anyhow, we get maybe 3 nights a year below freezing, 29 or so degrees. Every year I plant my maters in 5 gal buckets. I drill 1/2" holes on the sides about an inch from the bottom to allow water to drain. I then silicone pieces of screen to stop the soil from washing out. I put 1 plant to a bucket filled to the rim with potting soil.
The best thing about this is when it does freeze I can bring them into the garage, no tilling, weeding  or making rows. At the end of the season I just pull em out, shake off the dirt and put the buckets of soil away till next year.
The plants can be moved to better light, they can also be started earlier than usual because they can be brought inside at night.  Hope this helps, dave

Yea you southern boys try to make us from normal climates feel bad every spring. But then we will think about you when it's too hot for you to go out and pick your fruit, and the bugs that never die down there are eating up your stuff.
