Sunday the 16th was the last day for Modern Gun here in Arkansas. I was fortunate enough to bag an 8-point on the first day of Muzzleloader Season so I opted for the pistola from then on out.
I hunted a large line of scrapes and rubs on a chunk of land not far from home. At about 7:20am I had two deer (I thought doe) come into view. They approached to about 20 yards but were facing directly at me. They had me pegged.
They then snorted and bounded off to about 50 yards. They must have been some of them "slow" deer because they just kept hanging around. After a couple of minutes one of the deer stepped out into one of my shooting lanes at 30 yards, broadside. Put the dot on it's sholder and squeezed one off.
I could tell that the shot was good. As the deer took off running it held it's front leg straight out. I knew it was a good shoulder shot. I treated it like an archery shot and sat down and calmed my nerves for about 10 minutes. I found the hair and then the first drop of blood. Tracking was slow, but I didn't give up on it. I eventually found the deer about 100 yards away. It went further than I had expected it would but it was down nonetheless.
I was somewhat disappointed to see that the deer was a button buck. However, this was my first deer with a handgun and the drag was easy. The shot was angled in through the right front shoulder and out the left side of the ribcage. Poked a nice hole in each of the lungs.
I've owned my Ruger Super Redhawk now for about 8 years. It's wearing an UltraDot 30mm silver finish red dot sight in a set of Burris Ruger-Style Rings. Using Winchester's Supreme Partition Gold (250gr. HP) rounds I'm able to print 1 1/2" groups at 50 yards. After 8 years it's nice to have a kill under my belt with the 44.
