Which one?
« on: March 24, 2010, 06:19:28 PM »
I am looking for a new scope for a H&R handi rifle, ultra hunter in 45-70 which will be fed ruger no.1 level loads.  I have my choices narrowed to the burris fullfield II 2-7x35, the weaver V7 2.5-7x32, and the new redfield revolution 2-7x33.  I have a couple other fullfield IIs and I'm happy with them...just wondering if anyone had experiences with the others, especially the redfield.  Or maybe someone could suggest another scope I may have overlooked.  Trying to keep it under $200.

I have a Burris 2x7x32 Pistol scope and it's great. I also have a new Redfield and IMO the Redfield is brighter than the Burris.

The new Mueller 3x9 Hybrid has 4.25" eye relief..and your defiantly going to need the longest shooting Ruger loads out of a Handi..they are going for  $149.00...Quick likes them..http://www.muelleroptics.com/products/MU3940EER.html

One more to add to the list...the elite 3200 2-7.  I really prefer the lower power capability of a 2-7 vs. a 3-9.  Even with the smaller objuctives they still allow for a comparable sized exit pupil.  Ideally I would like something like a true 1-6 power.  Unfortunately the only one im aware of is a swarovski that run about 1700 bucks.  Burris has their new 6X line but all they offer is a 2-12.  Maybe a 1-6 is in their future that will be a bit more affordable.

The Elites are great scopes, but short on eye relief at 3", you'll want at least 3½", 4" would be better if you're shooting ruger loads in the Ultra. I have a Nikon Omega with 5" of eye relief on my SS Ultra which I too shoot ruger loads using Barnes data for the 300gr TSX-FB.

Well the redfield shows 4.2" at 2x and 3.7" at 7x.  This seems sufficient.  I really like the ranging reticle in the redfield too.  Not to mention the price (>$140 delivered).  Just dont know about the quality yet.  Just seems hard to believe that a scope as high a quality as it appears to be can be sold at that price.  I guess if I dont like it I can put it on the wifes 30-30 mod 94. ;)

Buy it and let us know how it works, I have the 3-9x40 with 4-plex reticle, but haven't mounted it on anything yet, I suspect the current price is temporary until they get popular and then they'll go up some.  :-\

Think I'm gonna try out the redfield.  BTW does anyone know where I can get replacement turret caps for a 4.5-14 Burris Fullfield II?  I have tried emailing their customer service several times without a response.

I have an elite 3200 2-7-32.
I actually took it off my 7mm-08 and am now using a Burris Timberline 4.5X-14X-32mm.(this is the Burris short mag replacement). I love the clarity this scope offers. The Ballistic Plex reticle is great. Eye relief is 3.75 - 5 inches
length 11.3 inches, weight 15 ounces, AO works perfectly. HiLume lens multi coatings provide awesome brightness
great scope for a bit over $200.00

I stopped in a local gun shop and picked up a new Redfield 3-9x40 the other day. I'm going to mount in on a .357 or .44 magnum rifle for my son (when I can find the gun I want). Until then, I mounted it on a muzzleloader and took it to the range.

First off, the fit and finish is of good quality. The optics are clear and crisp (even in low light) and the adjustments are sure.

Having mounted it in a set of Warne rings, I went to work. I shot the muzzleloader about a dozen times to get things sighted in (and play a bit) and everything is locked in and good to go.

While it certainly wasn't an endurance test, the scope adjusted easily, held those adjustments, provides plenty of eye relief and again, the optics are crisp and clear (even in low light). IMHO, it's represents a tremendous value in optics.

With the warranty being backed by Leupold, I don't see how I can go wrong.....

Jason,

I have a new Redifield 3 9 40 on a 22" 45 70 Handi.  Have shot about 60 rounds, about half of them are Ruger #1 loads, and the scope is working fine.  The eye relief is good but my bench rest technique is not the best so this scope has bitten me about 6 times.  Probably more operator error that an eye relief/recoil problem.  I like the scope a little better than the 3 9 40 Leupold Rifleman I have.  Also, I have found them online delivered for about $135.  I just bought a 4 12 40 Redfield and waiting for it to show up so I can put it on my 30-06 Handi.

Good Luck
