Pulling M1 Carbine front sight?
« on: March 28, 2010, 08:26:53 PM »
I buggered up the front sight, and need to swap it out. Got new front sight, key and pin, sight puller, sight installer and a barrel block coming.
What's the RIGHT way to pull and install an M1 Carbine front sight? TIA

I purchased a NPM carbine a couple of years ago that someone ground off the protective ears on.  I purchased an M1 Carbine front sight removal tool, which removed the sight slicker than whatever.  I didn't purchase the front sight installation tool, instead just lubed the front of the barrel with some white lithium grease, and gently tapped the front sight back into position, using a brass punch and gunsmith's hammer with a piece of folded paper towel between the sight and the punch.  It went on gently and smoothly, no hiccups whatsoever.  When I could see daylight through the hole I reinstalled the pin to secure it.

I also had to put a new rear sight on the carbine because the Type III was busted (no adjustment).  I just gently tapped it out (left to right) with that same little brass hammer with the same little piece of paper towel to help deaden the blows, it came out slick as pie.  Reinstalled just as easily as the front sight did, with an original Type II.  Good luck with your modification.

Let us know how that front sight installation tool works out.  I just couldn't cough up the additional dough at the time.  I figured I'd give it a go first without it, and if it didn't appear to want to go on, then I'd belly up and buy the install tool.  You won't have any problems I don't think.  i believe I'd still put some lube of some kind over the barrel to protect your finish tho'.  Dry metal sliding on dry metal ain't good.  Best of luck!

Will do, Chris. The install tool should arrive sometime next week, and I'll take care of the front sight swap when it comes in.

FINALLY got around to removing the original front sight and installing the replacement. The installation tool made it a lot easier to put the new front sight on and turn it to fit over the key. The hardest part was to tap (hammer?) the front sight pin back in. Piece of Cake!
Left the original key in and re-used the front sight pin, so now I've got a spare key and pin along with the front sight removal tool and installation tool. Anybody in the San Francisco Bay area need an M1 Carbine Front Sight replaced?  ;)
