I have a Ruger Super Blackhawk with 7.5 inch barrel. I am planning to have Magna-port do their Predator Conversion to this gun, but I'm struggling with length to make barrel. Barrel must be 5.5 for legal hunting in my state. My question is Stick with 7.5 barrel or cut to 5.5. Your thoughts and opions appreaciated.

i have had a lot of ruger handguns .some in 44 mag.and 45lc. ,357mag.    i practice with them alot. i personally do'nt think barrel lenght matters. i do just as well with 45/8's in my new sbh as i did in my 7.5 sbh hunter.my 44's do alittle better than my .45colts in my blk. hawks,but not by much.i did not hunt with my 357's they were in sp-101's,but with 2 1/4 i could still put 5 rds. in a paper plate at 50 yds.I WAS THINKING ABOUT GETTING MY STAINLESS SBH PORTED. BUT I DO'NT MINED THE RECOIL.YET.I'VE SEEN LAYNE SIMPSON'S MAGNA-PORT PREDATOR A FEW TIMES IN SHOOTINGTIMES MAG. I LIKE THE SET-UP.I'LL HAVE MINE THAT WAY SOMEDAY.

Bore44:  Please let me suggest that before you send out that revolver, see if there is one in 5.5 inch that you can heft and get a feel for.  I have always loved the looks of a 7.5 inch SAA Colt, but when I handled one and then compared the feel to the 5.5 and 4&3/4 inch bbls, I found the 7.5 inch bbl to be too ungainly and the 5.5, which I never liked the looks of, to be as good a feel in my hand as the 4&3/4".  I now know that if I purchased one based on its looks alone, such as that 7.5 inch SAA, I would have been disappointed.  HTH.  Mikey.

I intitially owned a .41 blackhawk in a 6 1/2"  and traded for a 4 5/8 for more compact carry. I now believe the 5 1/2 would probably be the perfect compromise for a hunting gun.

Thanks for the replys. I'm going today to the gun show. Maybe I'll get to try out several different barrel lenghts.

Like the fellers said, It won't make a whits difference to what you are hunting.  Go with what feels the best to you.  Some people like a 7.5 but I find the 5.5 or 4.75 feels the best to me.  Had a SBH stainless with a 5.5 bbl w/a red dot on it.  Great gun, had a stupid attack and let it go.

       Dave Hall, you should get your gun down to Ken Kelly at Mag-na-port and let him make that a Predator.  When you do, you will wonder why you waited so long to do it.  While you are at it, have him do his polished rings on it to really dress it up!  Tell him Lewis Crawford sent you.  Ken always hunts the first couple of days of Michigan Deer season up this way, so I'll be seeing him Friday.  Got another couple to drop off to him so he can make them pretty!  He's one of the best!

When I use a revolver I like the shorter barrels. a 4 5/8 Blackhawk is much more portable than a 7.5 inch. There is no difference between the accuracy of short and long barrels. My range for revolvers with open sights is "the closer, the better". Barrel length has nothing to do with it.

Longer barrels have more velocity but in a 44 or 45 it wont make any difference to a deer. In a .357 I tend to want all of the velocity I can get so I go with longer barrels with it.

Short barrels are louder. Short barrels have more muzzle flip under recoil. Short barrels carry so good.

You have to try both. Use both hunting. Standing in a gun store and pointing it around will give you an impression of what you think looks better and what you think feels better. These impressions are meaningless. Use them hunting. Give both an equal chance. You may still like long barrels but it wont be because the short barrel wont measure up.

Use what you like. Thats what its all about.

Thanks for all your input. I went to the gun show and tried hefting different barrel lentths. I liked them all.

Sent my SBH to Mag na port. I desided to keep the 7.5 barrel on this handgun since it will mainly be used for hunting. Looking forward to getting it back and trying it out.      Maybe the next one will have 5.5 barrell.
