Old FORDS never die

but they do bust tie rods



I actually drove the truck home and made five turns.....at five mph.....



tried to get the tapered shaft out of the knucke via BFH but finally resorted to the puller, or pusher rather



finally got that dude out of there



take care of your pullers by lubricating the threads



got tired of kneeling down do unscrew the tie rod so I dropped the whole shootin match

A little grease now and then you might not have had the problem. Mine 97 has over 300k miles and the rod ends are still tight.

you got me there Mauser, I have to admit it
the ball end of that tapered shaft is as dry as a bone
there is more to it than oil changes and brakes

lesson learned, grease  is cheap!

id have to guess your truck doesnt get off the payment often! Tie rod ends are a wear item and its truely amazing yours lasted that long even if all you did was drive on a straight line on a freeway at 45mph! John if your not a greaser while your under there you might want to give a good luck at your ball joints too!

Gotta tell you the last three Fords I've owned have no grease ends on them. '87 Bronco II 150k, front end still tight, '97 Explorer lasted till 160k though are changed now, and finally my '00 Expedition is at 180k and tight. Don't beat yourself up too bad, the OEM don't always have greasable ends.

Hey John, what year is your Ford? Mine's a 95 F-150, had to have new ball joints in it last year, got joints with grease fittings, the originals had none. Now I keep that front end well greazzzeed :D I'll do whatever it takes to keep that old 300 inline movin! scout4<><
