Hillside Game Preserve in Maine...
« on: December 07, 2003, 03:41:32 PM »
I was wondering if anyone in the New England area has hunted this place before. They state in an ad that they are the largest game preserve in New England. How is the hunting? Is it too easy or is there an element of fair chase involved. I would assume that hunting with a handgun or bow would make it more challenging.

I was thinking about going somewhere over the Christmas holiday to hunt and thought that this place would be closer that running off to Texas or some other place that is similar.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I hunted there several years ago, '97 or '98.  At the time he had about 200 acres fenced in for the boars, it was a thick cedar swamp.  I used a muzzel loader, .56 cal. smooth bore. we had to track the wounder hog with hounds and i had to finish the job with a knife behind the front leg into the heart.  Probably the most exciting hunt I was ever on.  I plan on going back some day if i can evre get a group from my club together to go.  For the money it was a very economical hunt, food lodging and the hunt all rolled into one.  If you want more info send me a personal e-mail.

Thank you Steve for the response. I was a bit worried that the hunt would be too much like a "barn yard" hunt. I know some preserves have that reputation, while others have some challenge to it.

I ma planning to go the weekend after Christmas for a wild boar and possibly a red deer doe. Hopefully it will be a fun weekend.

Gooood Luck......  You will need it.

Please post about your hunt after you come back.  Scott the owner is a piece of work, oh, and bring some edible food.  And then there's the 10 acre hog area...be careful.

Hey Steve,  I work in Worcester.  I'd like to compare notes someday over lunch at Shorah's.

Hello Doc:

Thanks for the extra information. I am looking forward to this little trip. I will give a run down of the hunt for the forum after I get back. I want to add a challenge and use a large bore muzzleloading handgun. That should be interesting to say the least.
