scoping a 657 Smith

I'm putting a Leupold 2x on my 657 41 mag. Please post some pics of your N frame scope/mount setup. I'm thinking a basic weaver setup so I can change ring hieghts easily if needed.  What do you guys use? Thanks

Howdy,
How do the bases attach to the frame? I recall my brother-in-law (Robin's brother, Mike) using a B-Square base on a M29 and mounting an Aimpoint. After three shots the screws sheared and the optic went over his shoulder.

Newer Smith revolvers a pre drilled an tapped under the rear sight.  Weaver and other brands make bases to mount to those holes.  If the Weaver mount won't hold up I'll switch to a Leupold dual dovetail system.

Weigand makes a great mount for the S&W and your gun should already be drilled and tapped under the rear sight.  I would use as low of rings as possible to mount the scope.  I have a PC 44 mag with slots milled in the barrel for mounting optics.  It threw the balance off for me and I went back to the Weigand like I have on my other guns.  It is the way to go in my opinion.

The Leupold would be my first choice. Have that mount on my 6'' 686 357 mag.

The weigand is a great mount, i use those on a few guns. My 657 is below, also been pretty happy with the leupold dual dovetail sets...has held fine with no issues.

The 2X leupold scope is a fine piece of glass; as 2X fixed-power scopes go, it & the Basuch & Lomb elite are my favorites, i think you will be very happy with your rig.

is your 657 drilled & tapped?

Yes, my 657 is drilled and tapped. I picked up a silver weaver base a Sportsman's warehouse for $8.00. I'll give it a try since I already have rings. thanks for all your input.

I had a mount which attacted to the frame It had the scope high so you could use iron sights. it seemed to top heavy.i do have a B- Square with barrel clamps and need to remove rear sight  Looks a bit weird but holds tighter than the hinges of hell.Love to have the frame tapped someday if i was sure the gunsmith would not mangle the job..........

Same damm thing. Ebay mount, both screws stripped. Mad. Three shots milder hand loads, over the shoulder. I had the factory open sites and re-mounted. Amazing accuracy. On the way home I stopped at the gun store and priced the Leapold mounts. Too much. I am a novice gunsmith. I re tapped the holes, used longer screws, and drilled and counter sunk the scope mount. Three screws, a little epoxy, and the barrel clamp. That mount is never coming off again. 10.00 in the mount, about 2 hours work. Millet Red dot, 50c piece every time 50y. Hand loads, factory loads, MOA of deer at 100y. Ready.

I forgot to post this. The B-Sguare mount does not fit on a 657. The contour is not right. I had to us a Dremmil tool and fit the mount to the frame so as it would lay flat. I drilled new holes for the three screws. Any mount can fit if machined. I was just bored and cheap. I have used any rail available on most of my rifles, just machined them to fit. I have a Leapold mount for my NMBH 45 colt. Fit perfect but ugly and not right for a SA. It's in the drawer. One Ragged Hole and shoot within my limitations. The 41 mag is cool and outshoots me.
