7x30 with 120 grain ballistic tips
« on: April 16, 2010, 01:33:40 PM »
Would 120 grain ballistic tips be good on deer out to 200 yards.  I had troulble with federal soft points not expanding well and leaving poor blood trail.  I am shooting 14" contender in 7x30 waters.  If not what do you recommend.  thanks

My opinion would be that no matter what bullet you are using, it probably won't expand much at 200 yards when fired for a Super 14" barrel...

I am getting about 2200 fps from mine using a Hornady 120 grainer.  Not much velocity and foot-pounds of energy left at that 200-yard distance...

Two hundred yards might be pushing the distance a bit...

Good-luck...BCB

I would have to say, it would not be a problem, especially with the B.tips. Ballistic tips are put together a little differently than a lead nose tip bullet. I have used that same bullet on a corican ram, yes smaller than a deer, but at 2330 fps, with the range right at that 200 mark it entered in the rear hip and traversed out in front of the off side shoulder and by the looks of the exit wound it definatley expanded. I have also used the Hornady 120 S.P. at 2200 fps, but never at the 200yd range, usually at 100 or less, with no problems. My barrel is 15", and one other thing, those federal bullets are also used for double duty in a rifle, could be there put together a little tougher for that reason, just a guess though. Crash87

I have loaded the Nosler 120 BT and the Sierra 130 pistol bullet.  I have had much better results at ranges from 40 yds to 156 yds with the Sierra bullet.  I've taken some deer with the 120 Nosler and they didn't fall DRT like the Sierra 130 delivered.  Granted my sampling is only about ten deer, but for accuracy and effectiveness, I recommend the Sierra.  I will never forget a straight on shot with the Sierra.  That deer sat down on its rear like a dog on its way down.  It really did a number.  At short ranges, I've had BTs yield bad performance from high power rifles and my 7-30W.

Do they still make the Sierra 130 pointed pistol bullet?  I hope so.  Give it a try if you can find it.

The boy used a 140 Silver Ballistic Tip on white tail @ 300, the bullet did not penetrate, it exploded on the shoulder, a second neck shot same thing, exploded, luckily it nicked the artrey, so the deer was harvested.
But not the preformance I expected, I'll have him loaded with Barnes TTSX this season.
I'm going to reserve the Ballistic Tip for varment, and use something with a bit more thump for deer. I plan on useing Accubonds myself

Assuming 2200 fps, although a bit higher velocity can be achieved, but I am shooting at the 2200 fps mark as I never could get much higher velocities and continue to maintain an acceptable accuracy for consistant 200 yard shots.  Especially under actual field conditions...

I still question the 200 yard effectiveness of the 7-30 Waters and a 120 grainer…

With a 100 yard zero, you are about 7.5” low at 200 yards—that might be O.K….

At 200 yards, the bullet is only traveling at approximately 1750 fps—this starts to not be O.K….

And the foot-pounds of energy at 200 yards are only 850 foot-pounds—that ain’t O.K….

From what I have read in articles and such by the creator of the 7-30 Waters, Ken Waters, I don’t think, considered this cartridge to be a 200 yard killer for deer.  Of course better bullets are available, but I ain’t shooting at a white-tail at that distance…

Good-luck…BCB

(I would never shoot a deer in the hip no matter what cartridge I was using)

This was my first Contender set-up. As such I was new to everything involved with them and did QUITE a bit of research. I had purchased it exclusively for a Wisconsin hunt and wanted all I could get from the loads with accuracy and energy.

After spending hours on the phone with powder and bullet companies, discussing my needs I settled on the 140gr Nosler BT for the final hunting load. My criteria had to have a bullet which would provide at minimum double caliber expansion at impact velocities attainable out to 200yds. This narrowed the field down to only a couple of bullet really quick. It ended up being between the Noslers and the Barnes, but the latter was more trouble than it was worth so I stuck with the BT.

Using Winchester cases, I worked through several suggested powders and ended up with RL-15 as the top performer, in both accuracy and velocity. While I do freely admit I pushed the load a bit initially, the results were outstanding. I didn't get the deer I was looking for on the initial hunt, but have taken several hogs out to 200yds and one whitetail doe at 283 yards and the bullet expanded wonderfully. In fact it literally almost flipped her over sideways when it hit her in the shoulder. It penetrated the onside shoulder in about a quarter sized hole and exited with about a 2" hole in the offside ribs destroying everything in between. She made one leap and piled up.

The only issue I could say I have really had with the BT, was on closer shots of around 25 - 50yds where the bullet DID expand rather violently. For a general deer load where surrounding meat damage might be an exception this might be an issue, but if your hunting the once in a lifetime trophy, meat damage to me is of little concern as long as the vitals are destroyed.

I have since backed off the charge a bit but am still getting 2250 from my barrel with excellent accuracy. Also while I have not tried any of the Hornady SST's, the standard lead tipped version of the boat tail bullet also shoots less than 1" at 100yds from my gun. Same loads with both bullets are pretty boring actually as the groups are generally only changed by how much paper you want to tear off the edges of the initial hole.

There are WAY more possibly great bullets available now than when I worked up my loads, but I have plenty of bullets loaded and no real reason to change whats already working. If I did, I would look hard at the Accubonds or the SST's both in 140grs and work up to an accurate load with a safe max velocity, and be done with it.

Looking at contender book may go with 139 sst hornady or nosler 140 partition.  Think these will expand well at 100 yards.

It's my understanding that Nosler made the 120gr BT tougher a few years ago due to complaints about them "blowing up".  Why don't you contact Nosler and ask them how fast they need to be going to open up?  Then be sure to let the rest of us know, I plan on trying them in my 22 inch barrel, 7-30, and also with my 7mm-08's.  I like Hornadys info ticket included in their handgun bullet boxes showing the speed range needed for best performance.  DP

I should specify that the ammo I tried was factory Winchester Supreme with the Nolser Silver Ballistic Tip.

If you select the proper powders for the job there is no reason you shouldn't be able to exceed 2400 fps with 120s from a 14" barrel. JD Jones of SSK Industries has commented in the past in SIXGUNNER that if you push a Nosler BT to 2300 fps it will expand well at 300 yards. I've not personally tried it but many others have reported kills out to as much as 400 yards or more with BTs in their Contenders.

I personally consider the 7-30 to be a 225-250 yard big game round but with a handgun that's a mighty long way for field rest positions anyway.

For shots out to 150 you should be fine with most any weight between 120 and 140grs. I would not limit yourself to the 120's when you test your loads however as the heavier bullets do a remarkable job in those Contenders.

This said, do yourself a favor, contact the ballistic dept of which ever make your looking for, and ask them about the low end expansion and impact velocities. They know what the bullets were designed for and can give you the info that will help out with your decisions.

Also you might look over the Hodgdon reloading data site for pistols, as they have quite a list of loads.

Good luck

looked in my books and ive shot 4 deer with the 120 bt out of contender. Ranges from 45 yards to 125 yards. All four were marked as deer went down in its tracks. All four had marked that the bullet did alot of internal damage. All 4 were marked entrance hole behind front shoulder no exit hole.  Looks like it worked for me.

thanks for your replys.  I will give them a shot and read load data.  I shot two deer last year at 90 and 105 yards with the federal over the counter 120 grain flat nose and it did not leave much of a hole and very little blood trail even though one went 40 yards and other went 80 yards after shot.  This is why considering ballistic tips.  I hunt small tracts of land and can't afford deer running too far after shot.

Might consider getting a bigger caliber to slow em down sooner, 35 Rem, 44 Mag or the 45-70 :o.  Those 3 have always worked well for me, although in a longer tube. ;)  DP

15" 7x30 waters barrel with 140BT is one of my favorite contender barrels.  I have taken one deer @275yards and dropped like a rock.  Bullet in and out.  Dime size hole in, quarter to half dollar size hole out.

The 120s are accurate and will do, but they are not (IMHO) the best selection for deer.  That is why I went to the 140s.

My barrel will group shots inside a half scale chicken silhouette target at 200 meters as long as I can keep shooting it.  It drops the 55lb ram targets very fast.

If you choose the correct bullet and powder for your barrel, you will not be limited to 200 yard shots.
