Removing Contender open sights

Removing open sights ,whats the trick to remove these without stripping the screws ? I assume they must have used loctite at the factory ?

I never had trouble with that.  I did have several that I had to drift the hinge pin out and remove the site from the base to get to the screws.

A correct fitting gunsmith screwdriver goes a long way towards this. I removed the sights on both my 14" barrels and mounted optics.

One other little trick that I have used in the past. With a CORRECT fitting screw driver. LIGHTLY Tap with a mallet, I have a leather one I use for that purpose. Sometimes this will break the bond between threads. A soaking with break free or WD 40 sometimes also works. Just don't get in a hurry.   Jerry J

One of the ''tricks'' is when you get down to removing the screws----with a properly fitting screwdriver----is to invert the barrel and heat the screws. You can do it with a lighter, candle, soldering iron or pick your own method. If they are loc-tited the heat should break the bond so you dont break a screw.  rp

Jerry has about the easiest method.   What I do... I put counter-clockwise pressure on the screwdriver with one hand and give it a good whack with a wooden mallet in the other.   One whack is usually enough.   Just guard against it coming out of the slot and gouging the sight/barrel.

Agree with above. Right fitting screwdriver.
Bought a big set of Wheeler Engineering Gunsmithing screwdrivers years ago. No more burred or stripped screws.

Yup,between giving it a good rap and using the correct fitting screwdriver...it worked.

another tip for remving screws that have been put in with loc-tite,  use a proper fitting screwdriver and put a little tesion on it while heating the screwdriver blade with a propane torch. You dont have to get it red hot but heat it enough for the heat transfer to the screw. this prevents damage to the gun from direct heat to areas that you dont want it. once you feel like it has heated up you can turn off heat and try removing scews.  it has worked for me before.

Jerry has best way . I have a friend that does just as stated . He once explained that alot of times its the back side of the screw head that is the problem . It may have rust , a burr or other reason to stick in place . The tapping will also loosen this . I think he is correct since i have see screws break off then the threaded part could be removed with fingers or needle nose pliers .
