BAR Safari .338
« on: March 15, 2010, 12:43:45 AM »
I got a good deal on a BAR Safari grade in .338 Win Mag and put it in the safe. I haven't shot a semi-auto in years and really wasn't expecting too much out of it. Well, I mounted a Leupold VX III 3.5 X 10 on it and took it to the range a few days ago and I could not beleive how good it shoots. The recoil is less than my Bolt action .338 and it groups as good as anything I have at 100 yards with factory ammo. It is quite a bit more heavy than my bolt guns so I guess that accounts for the recoil difference. Either this rifle is exceptionally accurate for a semi-auto or I have been missing out for a long time. I always thought semi-autos were not all that accurate but this one sure proved otherwise. How about it guys? How do your semi-autos shoot?
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

I have the same gun with BOSS.  With reloads, 200gr. BT, the gun will break clays at 300yds without fail.  That is using a 3-9 Tasco scope.  I am sure there are bolt guns that will do better.  But, for hunting, the BAR will do all anybody needs.

Browning BAR's are notoriously accurate, and the fact that they're gas-operated has a lot to do with recoil attenuation.

I have one in 30-06 that I love! It was my first '06 and since I have bought an X-Bolt, but the BAR is my preference. My next Browning will be a B78 in 30-06.

A friend of mine had one in the late 60s I think.  His was a 7mag and he could hit a dime at 100 yards with a 3X9 Redfield Widefield.  I had a Rem 742 with a 4X Weaver and I could hit a soup can at best.

The browning BARs are well known for fine accuracery and light recoil. I too owned a 338 and it was very accurate...Light recoil as well.
