Hornady LevEvo Ammo problems in my 336 35 rem.
« on: April 15, 2010, 10:21:06 AM »
I purchased a new box of Hornady LeverEvolution Ammo before hunting season but never got to use it.  I've used this ammo before with great success so I was surprised on a recent trip to the range to find that closing the rifles bolt on these new cartridges seems to be difficult.  The lever just refuses to travel that last 1/4 inch and depress the "safety doohickey" under the lever. I can force it but that hardly seems wise.  The lever closes fine with no ammo. At present I have no other cartridges to try.

Have any of you had a similar experience?  I'm really hoping that this is an ammo problem and not an expensive rifle problem.  Any info or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Have you fired this rifle before with different factory ammo?  If so, then its most likely the ammo.

I've only used this type ammo since I bought the rifle 2 years ago.  I've never had a problem.  In fact the rifle has performed beautifully until now.

I'm considering pulling these bullets and resizing the brass and trying again with my own loads.  I’ve sort of been itching to buy a  set of 35 rem dies and this is the perfect excuse to make it happen.

I haven't had that problem in my 35 but I stopped shooting them in my 30-30 because over the last 10 months I've had bad lots that wouldn't group.

I haven't bought any for about 2 years, all of my older stuff has worked perfect.  I loaded up on it when it was still $18.00 a box and shot so good out of both my Marlins, still have 12 boxes of it.  DP

Try taking one or two of them and take a marker and go over the entire bullet let dry then load one singel shot so you dont scratch it up, then trying to close the lever to the point that it gets tight, do it a couple of times so you can see the scratches on the bullet, they may be seated to long or the sholder may be out of wack.

Change the follower (?) the little plastic cup inside the magazine tube to the one made for those pointed bullets.  The problems with the action I was having in my 336 CS. 35 Rem went away after changing that out.  Marlin sent me one for free.  If you haven't already changed that, there should be a warning on the Hornady ammo box indicating that it needs to be changed.   I had never noticed that warning until someone told me to look for it.  Sure enough, there it was.  problem solved.

Thanks for the comments.  Still no resolution, but seeing as nobody else seems to have this problem I'm going to look closely at the rifle.
