336 ER in 356 Win Reloading question
« on: April 20, 2010, 05:19:50 AM »
I finally got a 336 ER this weekend. So of course I have spent every waking moment reading up on reloading for it since that time. I have read in two different places that they do not recommend round nose bullets for this caliber just flat nose. I am well aware of the dangers of spire point bullets in a tube magazine but have never heard of a problem with round nose bullets. Is this accurate? Is is specific to this caliber? I want to load it with the 200 grn 35 cal hornady with the round nose but do not need a kaboom in my future. Any advice is appreciated.

It isn't a problem. Check on the IMR site. They recommend a couple of 200 and 250 roundnoses.

I didn't think so. I reload for other calibers for tube fed lever actions and it has never been a problem. I thought perhaps the others mis-typed or it was something caliber specific. Glad to hear I am not crazy.

ive used them without problem in my 356 but keep in mind that a 356 has about twice the recoil of a 3030 and that may be why they dont list them for use in it.

I seem to remember something about the RN ends being small enough to push on the primers, in theory cause a chain firing of rounds in the tube. Whether this has happened or someone just decided it sounded good, I have no idea.
All that being said, Hornady is now making those flextip bullets for reloaders. Some of these outghta be interesting from the 356.

I wouldn't be worried about any RN's. Barnes, and small orifice HP's on the other hand would cause some.
