lightening up a Savage 116FLSS?
« on: November 19, 2003, 09:36:05 AM »
I wonder what I will gain in weight reduction[-or performance] by reducing the 22"barrel of a Savage 116FLSS 308 or 7mm/08 to 18"or 20".I'm also thinking of putting a compact scope on it.
It's a bear finding an affordable lefthanded,light/ultralight rifle[s.n.I won't buy Japanese-don't appreciate their anti-U.S. trade policies].
Thanks.

The weight savings will be just a few ounces.  Loosing 2-4 inches of barrel is a really small weight savings.   Performance lost depends of caliber and efficiency level of the cartridge and the length change.  With fairly efficient cartridges such as the 308 and the 7-08 the lose will most likely be in the neighborhood of 40-60 fps per inch..  It would be much worse with a less efficient round such as the 300 WinMag..
