Fox with 17 HMR
« on: November 09, 2010, 05:46:24 AM »
Saw this fox busily hunting, so I started stalking at about 400 yards. Stalking through pines and goldenrods. Each time he appeared to be getting ready ro trot off, I kissed the back of my hand and froze in the weeds. I finally worked to within 100 yards, took him in the chest with a Federal V-max (orange tip as in Gander Mtn)...he folded like a paper kite..
   Rifle was a Savage 93R17 w/ bullbarrel and accutrigger, centerpoint scope set at about 7.5 power.

Great looking fox. The .17 is about perfect for foxes. I don't see many around (Massachusetts) due to alot of coyotes around. I see alot more gray foxes around when I call at night.

Thanks DrDoug. I have shot many a woodchuck with the .17 HMR, but this is my first fox with one. Seems like he was easier to kill than some of the chucks.

I shot a Red Fox back in the spring with my .17 H&R.  I was walking back across a big meadow at the Flood Project near my home.  The grass in the area ranged from knee to waist high.  The trail was rough and rutted, also slick from a recent rain.  I was consentrating on wqatching the footing and not paying much attention to what was ahead or around me.  I had already fallen once and did not want to do that again.  I had a screaming rabbit call in my mouth and was not really paying attention to the fact that everytime I exhaled it made a small squeak.  I heard it just was not thinking about it.  Suddenly there was something running at me.  Scared me pretty bad.  I just thumbed the hammer back, and squeezed the trigger.  I shot a Red Fox at 10 to 15 feet.  It was not pretty.  Did not look much differant than it would have if shot with my 30-06 at normal ranges.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

      Right on Sourdough...  From my experience with the little .17 HMR. a lot of folks don't realize the damage that little rascal can do, especially at 10-15 feet !

  Catfish;
     I do reload, but that little .17 still is a lot of fun. Both my NEF and Savage in .17 HMR are very accurate, which helps greatly in the "fun" department.
