Remington 700 LTR .308 win
« on: April 15, 2010, 02:39:52 PM »
Just picked up this rifle, what scope would you put on it.
I like Leupold but Weaver, Nikon, Burris and Bushnell have
some interesting choices.  Also look at SWFA  SS, if it
works, that's alot of scope for the money, who is making
it for SWFA?

Believe it or not the Super Sniper scope is made by Tasco!!!!! :o Yes it is true but it has nothing to do with the Tasco line of scopes. I have been reading about the SS scopes for a couple years now and I will own one some day soon because you just will not find a bad review of them. I have a new Remington 700 SPS Varmint in the 22-250 and I am still trying to decide what to put on it. I still may go with the SS but I can't decide on the power. This rifle is used for Groundhogs at long range between 100 and 500 yards. For this reason I am having a hard time deciding between the 16 or 20 power fixed scope. I think under 200 yards I would have a site picture problem. Dale

Can't REALLY be made by Tasco as they are not a real company or a scope manufacturer any longer. Bushnell bought out the name and like all scopes under the Bushnell umbrella they are made by some foreign company in any one of several Pacific Rim countries based on who submits the low bid to build to the specs Bushnell decides they want the scopes built to.

Once upon a long time ago the name Tasco was associated with a variety of optics ranging fron junk to really fine quality Made in Japan optics. Now all scopes with the name on them are relatively cheaply made and aimed at lower price point buyers. Technially like Bushnell Tasco never was a manufacturer but just an importer.

Check out Redfield, they're made in the U.S.A., by Leupold, just not as many bells and whistles.

I'd be a bit more leary of Leupolds nowadays than I would have a few years ago.  Seems like more and more scope manufacturers are making quality products that compete with/surpass Leupold quality.  Leupys do have one of the best warranties around though.  For the less expensive route the older model Super Snipers are hard to beat, as are the Bushnell 3200 10xs.  Anything approaching Leupold MK4 prices and you can definitely find additional options from other manufacturers (assuming that you want to utilize the "T" in LTR).

I'll admit to owning a couple of Leupold MK4 4.5-14x50s a little while ago.  Never had a problem with either, but one had some real mushy knobs that didn't fix with a little work to them.  That and I'm off the whole Mil reticle/MOA adjustments wagon as well.

Put a USO ST-10 on my SPS Tactical a while back and can't say enough good things about them.

I bought a Rem 700 sps varmint 308 win. a couple years ago. I adjusted the trigger down to 2 1/2 pounds and put the action into a Bell and Carlson stock. I then mounted a SWFA super sniper scope onto the rifle. For just under $1000.00 dollars I have a rifle that will shoot as well as any rifle can be expected to. I've been told it shoots better groups than a certain custom built 308 that an aquaintence has. He has over $3500.00 in his rifle. The SWFA super sniper is one heck of a scope for $300.00. I have cranked mine up from zero many times and it always returns to dead on zero.
