Shooting 45 out of a pocket gun
« on: April 03, 2010, 04:28:21 AM »
Fellow beardians,
I got a new shooting iron. A Bond Derringer in Colt 45. A big brother to my NAA mini revolver.

I have only fired a dozen or so rounds with the big gun but am well pleased.
My wife shot a video of me shooting my new cannon.

It is nicer than I anticipated. I am glad I bought it.

That is cerainly an attention getter, especially that figure eight muzzle!
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

there amazingly stout litte guns. I allways tell people the most viscous gun i ever shot was the buddys bond 45 deringer. He loaded it with 300 gran cast bullets and 22 grains of 110. It was like lighting off a stick of dynamite in your hand.

You are a braver man than I, Lloyd Smale. A max Blackhawk load is more than I want in my Blackhawk. At least the gun and your hand survived.

I have to admit I was nervous the first time I pulled the trigger.

That muzzle would get somebody's attention across a card table!

From what I've heard Bond Arms makes a real good quality piece.  Should serve you well.

Some calibers are not suitable in that small a package.
Just my opinion.

What was your load in this video? Recoil looks on the level of a .22LR?

I have to STRONGLY agree with you there. Years ago I bought an American Derringer in 45-70, and 1 pull of the trigger was all it took to convince me that I ordered the WRONG cartridge for that pocket cannon. Returned it back to American Derringer and had the barrel changed out to 45Colt. Even with lite loads it's still a handful and is strickly a belly gun.

None of my rounds have been squib type of rounds all have real recoil to them. I think the gun weighs about a pound and a half.

My first 12 reloads were the minimum recommended load for a 200 grain lead bullet using Trail Boss.  The filmed rounds had about the same recoil as a 9 in a plastic gun or 38 in a steel snub. After making the video, I shot factory 255g Winchester rounds just for comparison in the derringer. They are noticeably stronger.

The gun was purchased used at an excellent price and the caliber is what it is.

Last night after work I shot my 8" gong at 40 foot 4/4 times, standing using a two hand technique. I was shooting 230 grain lead bullets using the same load of trail boss. The primers were getting flattened out. I shot my Chrony a few weeks ago and haven't replaced it. I can't tell you the velocity but the recoil was more.

I really like the 45 Colt round. I only shoot it in a revolver and my pocket gun. I bought a box of shells 5 years ago for comparison but all my rounds are hand loads 90% are lead. I too would not have a use for 45/70 in a hand gun, the 45Colt can rock me when I use a Ruger load in my blackhawk. Docand. I like your American Derringer.

In a defensive gun fight , car jacking, assault, rape, all guns are belly guns. No argument there.  Mr Layton, I read a couple of weeks ago about your choice in a pocket guns, I don't remember the details, do you have a link to your thoughts.

The derringer is small because it has an extremely compact reloading system. Of course that is it's Achilles heel. Mine has a full 3" barrel and no cylinder gap.

First---I agree that in a tight no one feels the recoil.
I like too shoot.
I like too practice when I shoot.
I think---just me think---that some weapons, if shot enough, will ingrain some amount of flinching--anticipation of the recoil and a chance too pull off in a tight.
Now, I am old and and have never been one too see how much of a handful is enough.
I have a box of .357 with all but 5 bullets in it. I bought it for the .38 Scadium I own---I shoot .38's out of it----and----not many of them.
The gun is too small and light to do much practicing with comfortably.
I do own--well I soon will not own it after my daughter gives me my grandson--a .327 Smith and I am real comfortable with a range session with it.
I have another lined up for the wife--at least this will stay in my house and will probably replace the Scadium under the matress.
Blessings

I once shot a friends derringer in 44 mag. ONCE ! :o Was at our local gunshop, general store, post office, liquor store, the other day and he had a titanium something in 41mag, weighed about as much as a ping pong ball, don't think I'd like to shoot that much either....I do like the looks of that Northwest thingamajig in 22mag though. That looks like it would be a really nice "pocket" gun.

Neat looking little gun :).  I've thought a lot about getting a derringer lately.  I had thought about the Cobras, which are priced right, but I just can't get past them not having a trigger guard.  Makes me too nervous.  The Bond ones like this with the guard look much better IMHO.

some people can handle big recoil, i cannot, but my bro-in-law can. he will shot something flame will come out back him up a step and he will just laugh about it. one thing, he will usually hit what he is shooting at. have fun with that hand cannon.

On their web site they show barrels for about any caliber for 140 dollars. Interchangeable by the owner.
My wife wants a new gun in in 357. The 45 colt isn't that bad.

Doc-and:  I once shot the american deringer in 45/70 with a 3 inch barrel.  I thought if you held your off hand on top of the gun you could control the recoil.  It did but the front sight sliced my hand.(if it had been my gun I would have ground the sight off as it was wothless anyway.)

The reason the trigger on the derringers without a trigger guard is so heavy is fear of law suites.  I think they are afraid your thumb will slip off the hammer while cocking.

I once had the Bond in 45 Colt/410, got tired of the bulk and weight, good gun though.  rawhidekid 8)
