My Ruger Compact (almost same gun) in 308 comes in at 7 lbs 5 oz unloaded with Leuplod 3X scope and Ruger rings and Ching sling.

If a scope with the proper eye relief is installed (the shooter gets a full sight picture w/o head movement), the scout postitioned scope is easier AND faster to use than a scope in the conventional position.

Burris makes a "scout" scope that seems to be VERY popular with the folks who like forward optics- they show up on a lot of scout rifles.  I've looked at the Frontier rifles and there is provision to fit the Ruger scope mounts forward or in the traditional position on top of the receiver - not sure why, but Ruger states that the scope on a frontier should be mounted forward and not in the traditional location.  To me, it looks like the receiver on both the frontier and compact models are identical.  I believe that having flexibility to mount a forward optic when hunting in brush and change to a higher powered scope when hunting bean fields would be a great benefit.
