Does anyone have a good source?? Im looking at www.powderinc.com but the minimum order is 5 lbs... I am having trouble finding what I need local.

Where does everyone buy theirs?

I order from Powder Inc.

IF (and that's a big IF these days) you do find BP around here, it is priced like gold.

The price per pound of GOEX from Powder Inc. is generally less (sometimes much less) than any local supplier, even in the small lot with HazMat shipping.

And you can mix granulations. So you can have a fully stocked magazine and be ready to fire any BP weapon.

And finally, once you get started shooting cannons, five pounds is not nearly as much as it sounds like.

I am unaware of anyone that can ship you less than 5 lbs. Go to the Cannon link list and click on GOEX and a list of there distributors.
5 lbs of powder is not much powder when shooting a cannon.

Another source is muzzle loader clubs. These clubs often make bulk buys for club members.

When looking at Powder Inc powder prices, keep in mind that the price listed includes shipping and hazmat fee. You might want to check around your gun club and shooting friends to see if some one else might want order powder with you.

Ditto ,powder inc. they explian what you get for so much hazzard fee .better than the rest .

Ordering online isn't worth it unless you order at least 5 pounds (the HAZMAT fees will kill the savings reall quick). That's possibly why Powder, Inc doesn't even bother with smaller shipments.

If you let us know where you're located, we may be able to help you find a local supplier. The only big chain I know of that stocks it is Bass Pro, but if you're in the NW, that's not much help. If you go there, you'll have to ask for it - no one stocks BP out, even if they stock modern powder. Last time I checked their price, it was going for ~$28/lb.

Shipping regulations are what guide the 5 lb rule, something about original container. I believe JAX is in the DFW area.

I buy from Powder Inc. too. The 5 lb. minimun can be a variety pack of black powder 1 lb cans. They don't mix any substitutes with it because the canisters are different sizes. One place I checked with today will only ship a minimum of 25 lbs for $275.

The last order I got was from Coonie's in New Mexico; 25 lbs for about $250 total. I ended up selling about half at the Montana Cannon Shoot last year.

Yes sir. I live right in the middle of Dallas and Fort Worth. I will be working right next to a Bass Pro Shop tomorrow, So I will have to get in there and check it out. We have a Cabelas in Fort Worth that I can check as well. I called a Academy store near my house and they said that they sold BP, but couldnt tell me what it was.

Should I look for "Cannon" or is Fg ok?

I think you shot a good part of it also. I was out by the range this morning and notice the grain is greener and taller in a long strip right along where the firing line was...

FG will be fine.

If they stock BP, they should have it in mostly 2-4f, because they don't stock it for cannon shooter, but hunters, and 2 and 3f are the most common loads for rifles/muskets, and 4f is the most common priming powder. They'll probably also have 1f, but they'd probably keep less of that on hand (though they'd also generally sell less of it).

Went to Bass Pro today (Outdoor World) and they do carry Goex. 1f 2f 3f 4f is what they carry. $23 a pound. BUT they are out of 1F....
He said that they normally have 1F. He said that is what they sell the most of. AND they keep it in a cage locked up in the back room

I guess they are scared of anyone stealing it.
I still need to check Academy tomorrow. I got to talking to my neighbor about BP and he said he has a can of 2F (which he gave me) that he got from his dad when and never used. This begs the question, is 2F ok to use? OR only 1F?

I also did find these if anyone is looking for some .50 cal lead balls.

I just remembered that we have "Cheaper that Dirt" out in Fort Worth as well. Maybe they will carry it too.

What's the bore of the cannon you're shooting? 2f would be fine for small bores like a .50 cal.

I have a 1 inch bore. (many on here say its unsafe, so I prob wont shoot it.) BUT My father in law also has a 1inch bore as well that he got from a friend of his. It has thicker walls than mine does. I just want to make sure 2f isnt going to blow it up

The plan is to be shooting all saturday Cannon and guns.

George has said it right, don't get carried away with FFG and you will be just fine. Reduce your charges from what you have used in the past with Fg.

Sounds good. I was going to start with 100gr then work up to 200gr. I cant wait to get my golf ball cannon!!! They have a huge field and the pop-in-law wants to try and shoot it end to end. It will be too hot here soon to be outside

its already 100+ and summer has just started...

BTW I dont think they keep it in a cage . It is a heavy duty magazine .

George and DD are right , IF it's a safe cannon in the first place 2f is nothing to be overly concerned about .

throw 100 grains into it and work up .

Personaly I wish there was someplace around that carried BP ...I order from powder inc and ......a sponser in Virginia ..not coming up with the name right off . something shack

Back Creek Gun Shop Winchester VA THATS it ! IIRC you can order 5 pounds from them but of course with the hazzard fee youre paying a lot per can for it .

$23 a lb walk in and buy it off the shelf at Bass pro, or buy 5 lbs and pay $21.36 lb drop shipped to your house.
