Glock 19 vs Glock 19C
« on: January 26, 2010, 06:02:31 PM »
does anyone have any experience comparing the glock 19 to the glock 19C. i'm interested in purchasing one for carry. Is the only major difference between the two is that 19c has a compensated barrel? I'm concerned about excess muzzle flash during night shooting from the compensated barrel, any thoughts on this?

I'm interested in the glock 19C. The glock that i'm looking at is the PI1950203 (factory model #), i think it is the 19C can someone please confirm this?

Thanks For the Info In Advance, Zack

Thanks Zack

Yes, Graybeard is right. It's a factory ported barrel and slide.

I've shot the 23 against the 23C (mine) - which is a 40 S&W in the same size frame as the 19 - with the same ammo. I'd guess the gun is a little "flatter", but not by much. IMHO the 40 with heavier bullets and the 9mmP don't really respond to a comp like a 38 Super or similar would. So does it help? Yes. Does it help a lot and is it necessary. I'd say no to both and the blast is more noticeable.

I bought a 23C when I was younger and more stupid (still stupid, but less than then  ;D). The marketing sucked me in and they had just become available here. I do not like the idea of the blast, noise or the flash for defensive purposes. Shooting the pistol in a car for example across your body could direct blast towards your face through the top of the slide. I'd not do it on a defensive pistol again....

If our licensing process here was easier, I'd get a standard 23.

Then to confirm, the 19 is more "compact" than the full size 17. The 26 is more "compact" still. All are 9mmp.

I have a 19 and a Lone Wolf compensated barrel.  It makes quite a difference in mine.  I shoot lead reloads and wanted a barrel that works well for that, but did try swapping barrels at the range to see if I could feel the difference, and I could.  As others have said it also makes more noise and blast.  I wouldn't think it ideal for defensive use.  I use my S7W 4506 or one of my wheel guns for that.

Comps on 9mms are unnecessary on most guns, (OK on an "Open" gun making major PF) and downright impractical on carry guns. The muzzle flash has not proven to be a major problem in low light. The blast and potential for injury when fired from retention, or in a closed space is the problem with comp pistols. To get an idea of what those escaping gasses can do, fire one with a  newspaper draped over the vents.  I think you'll get the idea.

A friend bought a 19c the other day, It looked appealing but the thought of blast and report coming back at ya made me not think it was such a good idea. 9's are just not my "cup o tea" anyway.

Glock makes three sizes of most of their guns. In .40 S&W which is what I own they are the G22 full size, G23 mid size perhaps called compact by some and G27 smallest.

All share the same frame basically but the grip gets shorter on each as you go up in number and the barrels get shorter. Is the G27 any easier to conceal than the G23? Not to me and the short grip to me at least requires a mag extension to get my pinky finger on for control.

In 9mm I think they are models 17, 19 and 26 from largest to smallest but I'm not betting the farm on that last one.

Model numbers are correct, Bill.  The 23/19 are the best of the 9/.40 lot in my opinion. They handle and shoot as well as the 17/22, and carry as well as the 26/27. Just my opinion of course.

I totally agree with you on the 23 vs 27 and would love to trade my as new G27 for a same condition G23. It has night sights and so would a trade gun to replace it have to. Eventually if finances get back to where I can do some gun buying/trading I will make this happen. I'd also love to add lasers to all my self defense and carry handguns.

I still kinda prefer the larger capacity mags of the G22 for a house gun/truck gun where concealment is no issue. I have plenty of mags and what I keep ordering but find out of stock is a soft carry case that holds the firearm and five or six extra loaded mags. I'd like one for each of my Glocks so that the handgun and a pile of loaded mags can all be kept together and ready to grab at a moment's notice. A person would be pretty well armed with such a pack whether at home or in the truck. With night sights and a laser about the only thing that would be better would be a properly equiped shotgun or AR or both.

Graybeard,

I use the longer mags from the 22 as spares for my 23 and of course they all fit fine. I'd like some of the Scherer 29 round mags too, but they are not available here.

I also think that the 19/23 is the best frame size for carry in 40S&W. However, the 23 is a lot more bouncy than the 22 IMHO. A 27 is quite difficult for me to shoot well beyond spitting distance, but in 9mm the tiny ones (26/27) are a lot easier to control.

I have no problem controlling my G27 and in fact it is quite accurate even at 25 yards which is as far as I've shot it to date. I do however need the mag extension finger groove deal to let me get my little finger on for proper control. With the as issued mags the grip just isn't long enough.

I'd rather it had the G23/19 grip even if with the shorter barrel. Still I think the G23/19 over all is the best carry size gun of the three for a non uniform officer who of course isn't trying to conceal it.

Still if I had to be in a fire fight which I hope I never have to be I'd rather have the G22 and a whole pile of mags available. I'm aware either gun will take the longer mags but to me that's a rather odd feeling combination. I'm aware I can use them but would really prefer to use each with their proper mags. I have a more than adequate supply of proper length mags for each of my guns.

Wow guys Zack asked a different ? than most of the answers. Zack i bet you shoot it more in day light than in the dark, compensated will flash more. i think you will figure out you will not worry about many defence situations. Good luck with your choice.

Glock 19 is my go-to gun and very often carried on my person. These are well balanced and not at all difficult to shoot. I do not recommend the C version - not necessary in this weapon.

As stated above, the 17 is the full size, 19 is compact and 26 is sub-compact. A 19 will accept 17 magazines. A 26 will accept 17 and 19 magazines. Any of the three will accept Glock 18 (full auto version of the 17) - 33 round magazines for fun times at the range.

James Yeager is a pretty good gun guy - I have no affiliation - he is pretty strong on the 19. I tend to agree.

When my old agency switched to Glocks, the office weinies thought they were special and got themselves 22Cs.  First time I had them on the range for night fire after 3-4 rounds not one of those idiots could see their front sight (night siights) any more due to the powder residue from the compensator!  A compensated gun is fine for competition but not for a street defensive weapon. The muzzle blast and the sight issue negate any benefits.
