Citadel 45apc and Taurus 38 Super
« on: April 02, 2010, 07:21:08 PM »
Finally got them out to try them and am pleased.  The Citadel is a made in Phillipines and worked perfectly thru 100 rounds of factory and reloads, all 230gr ball.  This one has all the bells and whistles I would put on a basic model.  The Taurus 38 Super went thru 150 rounds and did fine EXCEPT the LAST round in one of the mags would come out and hit my head and when I picked up the brass, that one was torn up on the mouth of the case.  Every time I use that mag, the same thing.  Other one worked perfect. Candy store manager ordered me another from Taurus, plus I think I'll get some more for both.  These are the first 1911's I've owned, but have shot a few in the past.  Didn't try for groups, just shot free hand to check for function.  Happy with both, not gonna replace my revolvers, but I like em both.  DP

dpe:  aftermarket mags for 1911 38 Supers are available all over the place.  As for the last empty getting chewed up - sounds like the slide didn't travel back far enough for the rim to hit the ejector and when the slide came forward the empty was still held in place by the extractor and hit the ejection port which sent it back to you when the mouth got chewed up on the forward edge of the port.

What was the manufacturer of the 38 Super ammo?  Did the slide lock back after the last round when using the other mag??

Hey dpe,
I beat my head against the magazine well with my Taurus .38 Super. Taurus doesn't list their own mags on their website, so I tried Mecgars from CDNN. None of them would lock back the slide after that last round. I finally tried a Wilson Combat .38 Super slide stop from Brownell's and all is right with the 1911. The Mecgars are really nice 9-rounders with no rough edges and no failures. I found some 10-round conversion kits on www.auctionarms.com that were easy to install, reasonably priced, and also work well.
I'm using Aguilla 130-grain +P ammo from Natchez. It's hot stuff and the brass was flying over to the neighbors, so I replaced the spring with a 15-pounder. I could probably go with a 16#, but I'll shoot some different brands and loads before I get a whole collection of springs.
The Taurus is a nice package, eh?
