looking for a varmint scope

I'm looking for a varmint scope that won't break the bank. I'll mount it on an older Howa 223. any suggestions?

I have Bushnell Banner 4-12x40 AO (~$100) on a Handi 223 that I would use on a coyote up to 250 yds.
And a Leupold 6-18x40 AO with varmint reticle (~$500) on a Ruger 1-V 22-250 that I would use on a crow up to 300 yards if it was a safe shot.
Both are fine for their intended purposes.

You might check the GBO Optics Classifieds from time to time. If your putting it on an older gun, going used would get you a higher quality scope at a reasonable price. You can check the "notify" button on that forum and it will send you an email when something is posted.

Also I read about a lot of folks who are very please with Nikon.

Get the adjustable objective for sure, and mil-dots if you can find it.

I've got a Nikon Buckmasters 6-18x40 with side focus and mil dots on my 223 and I love it.  It's got really nice glass, a good varmint power range, and it's a little smaller than most varmint type scopes because it had the side focus instead of adjustable objective.  I got mine on sale for $299.

Vortex Crossfire 6-24x50mm on closeout at SWFA for $99.  Far and away the best glass for under $300 that I've seen.  I compare it favorably to my Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 and being left handed, the AO is much preferred to the side focus.

Pentax Pioneer II 4.5-14 available from CameralandNY for $139 shipped. That scope has enough field of view at 4.5 to hunt predators up close, and 14x is plenty for 250 yards. Also consider the Mueller APV for $115 shipped from several vendors. The APV has a smaller eyebox and it may wink out a bit if you don't keep your head still, but the optics are bright and clear.
