.50 T/C Hawken Range Report
« on: May 02, 2010, 01:03:48 PM »
T/C Hawken .50 with standard 1:48 factory barrel.  I'd never shot this one before.  .490 roundball, pillow tickin patch, Birddog6 patch lube, Windex wipe between shots, 60 grains of 3f Goex.  First shot was almost exactly in the middle of the lower left bull.  It was very hard to load until I switched to the Birddog 6 patch lube.  I'd have shot at 50 but I can even see the targets.

Looks like you got yourself a good barrel Swampman.  Good shooting.  I can't see for squat with open sights either.  A peep on the rear will get me out to 50 yards comfortably though.  I can even do 75 and 100 from the bench with plenty of time.

I think I'll look for smoe targets with bigger bulls.

You must have a steady hold Swampman, your offhand group looks about as good as your bench group.

Hello Swampman.
I found some great targets on gunnersden.com   Go to the rifle section,   they have 25 yard targets and bigger ones up to 250 yds.   they have a lot of orange in them for tired older eyes. Also tell me the routine you go thru with the windex.   i started it myself the other day  My routine is, windex patch  then a dry patch then a bore butter patch, then another dry patch.it works great for me.  I have been using black mag xp powder and holy smokes  i have never shot a cleaner powder.   the great thing is it is non corrosive and still lots of smoke. only 27 bucks for 10 oz.  and i heard soon they are increasing the container by 25 percent,   A much better deal than bh 209

I just use a barely dampened t-shirt patch between each shot.  I don't dry patch.  Does the Black Mag XP ignite well with regular #11 caps?

So I guess that barrel was not as trashed as you thought...  Good

This isn't that $63.00 dollar gun.

The black mag xp powder works great in sidelocks as well as revolvers, i have shot pounds of it and have not had one misfire. They are also making a flash powder for flintlocks. Can't say enough about this ultra-clean powder.

I use alcohol instead of water in my cleaning solution.  It evaporates.

I use Windshield Washer Fluid or Windex because they don't remove stock finish.

Only 27 bucks for 10 ounces is only twice as much as a full pound of Goex!

Hmmmm,   27 bucks for 10 oz.   then the company is soon going to give you 25 percent more,
plus if you read up on it you will find that you use 50 percent less powder to get the same velocitys   that's a lot more shots!!!!    plus clean-up is a breeze
i LOVE SHOOTING REAL BP BUT SOMETIMES DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO CLEAN UP
HERE WE GO AGAIN----SHOULD BE A FUN RIDE!

They claim some pretty impressive velocities on their web site.
