Ruger singel six
« on: April 30, 2010, 05:16:29 PM »
I Inherited a ruger single six, an older model, in 22 mag. and 22 lr  originally it had 2 cylinders I need to find a replacement for the 22 mag cylinder . question is will  they all be interchangeable ? I know a  "new ' cylinder would need to be timed to the pistol . or do you guys think  sending it to ruger would be better option ?

Thank you in advance fl.hillbilly

I have an older Single Six that I got from my Dad back in the 70's. They are really nice guns. I would suggest you give Ruger a call at 603-865-2442. They are open Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm EST.

I wouldn't bother with the mag. If you don't wear muffs every time you shoot it you will find yourself saying huh every time you see someones lips moving.

I had about the same problem. At a gun show some years back I found a mint 3 screw Ruger Single Six with a 5 1/2" with a patridge front sight ( It was exactly what I was looking for ). It only had a 22 Mag cly. I called Ruger in Newport, NH to have a 22 LR cly. made to match the blueing, markings and timing. They did a beautiful job that didn't break the bank. And the new cly. matches 100% & shoots great.
I only live about 1 hr from the Newport NH plant, so I brought it right to them.

I'd look for a used cylinder in 22 lr or 22 magnum.  If it's a long rifle cylinder, a gunsmith would be able to ream it to 22 magnum for you for not too much money.  Most of these cylinders are a drop in fit, and will be close enough not to cause problems for you.  I tried a used New Model ACP cylinder in an Old Model 45 Colt that I had and it worked with no effort at fitting.  It was accurate and fun to shoot.  In fact, I kind of wish I'd held onto the cylinder when I resold the revolver since they're kind of hard to find.  As long as the cylinder indexes properly when you work the action and doesn't spit through the cylinder gap when you shoot it, you'll be fine.

Just the opposite for me... the old model Single Six (c. 1969) I bought only has the 22MAG cylinder.   What I wanted it for so I never worried about getting a LR cylinder for it.   If I want to shoot LR I use my old model Super Bearcat (c. 1971).

One thing about sending an old model in to Ruger... they will want to upgrade it to the NM transfer bar safety.   A lot of OM Rugers have been ruined (IMO) by letting them do that.   Not sure if they insist or if they will do work without upgrading, so I'd check first if you don't want the upgrade.   Seems like I remember folks saying theirs got upgraded without them being asked first.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

They upgrade the older models as a legal requirement, since the transfer bar upgrade was done as a safety precaution.  They'll send your old parts back with the gun.
