Guide Gun Ring Height

I'm new to this site because I only recently purchased an 18.5" ported guide gun.  Your advice in setting up this new purchase is much appreciated.

I'd appreciate recommendations in terms of bases, rings, ring height (low, medium, or high) to best mount a Weaver 1x3x20 scope on the guide gun.  I'm inclined to get Warne rings, but I'm open to recommendations all around.   

The gun will be used principally for deer and elk and all shots will be less than 200 yards, with most being 100 yards or less.  I'll probably use 405 grain Remington handloads or Hornady Leverevolution 325 grain bullets.  This has yet to be determined.

I've installed Talley extra low mounts on my 1895 GS, ported,  for use w/ a Leupold vx3 1.5-5 x20 scope. Comes up to view quite nicely w/both eyes open.  Same desired application.  I had to order the mounts directly from Talley. Best regards,  Jim

Blackhawk welcome to GBO. Lots of good folk on here. There are many ways to set up a GG and in my opinion it will depend on what your hunting with it. Deer and elk are thin skinned game so the LE 325gr. ammo will work fine. A compact type scope works great with 32 or a 33mm objective lens which will allow you to use lo rings to keep your cheek on the stock. Because of the recoil I would stay with a realitivley good scope say a Bushnell, Leopold etc. I have a scout set-up on my GG but that may not be for everyone. On my 30-30 I use a Leupold 2-7x32 shotgun scope with heavy duplex retical which works well in deep woods or open areas.









The first picture is the 30-30 and the GG is the last.

Thanks for sharing.  From the pics it appears that you are using low height rings.  Is that correct?  Any problem with getting to the hammer on the 30-30 which has the scope in the traditional location?  Thanks for clarifying.

Actually there are hammer extensions on both guns. The 30-30 has one on it because the scope does get in the way some and on the GG it just gives you a little more to grab the hammer with thick insulated gloves on. Yes both guns have lo rings on them. The GG has Leupold quick release rings so I  can remove the scope and use the XS ghost ring. The 30-30 has Burris Zee lo rings which keeps your cheek on the stock.

Thanks again for your reply and help.  I've not used a scout scope setup, but might consider it for the guide gun.  Having quick detach rings makes sense in order to be able to use iron sights if needed.  Do like the XS ghost ring setup for that.  Thanks again for the help.

I'm thinking about a scout scope as well on my guide gun, I have a set of xs sights on the way. My question for old grizz is what scope do you have on your GG?  Also (for anyone else that can answer) what is the rough eye releif needed for the xs scout scope mount? will a normal pistol scope work on do you have to stick to scout scopes? IE extended eye releif  scopes made just for scout mounts like leupolds and burris's "scout scope" Thanks

No need for expensive rings or scopes.  Weaver low Tip-offs or Quad-Locs on a Weaver Base  work great.  The Nikon Prostaff 2-7X32 can't be beat for twice the money.  I own more expensive scopes but I don't own any better scopes.

I have a 2-7 prostaff on my guide gun. yes it is a good scope I have two 2-7's and one 3-9. My only problem with them is the eye releif variance it's very small about .3 of a inch where on a leupold you have 1.5 inches where  your eye can be to use the scope. Granted the 2-7 has 4.1 inches of eye releif but off a bench it's still hitting me in the forehead and comeing very close while offhand. That's the main reason why I was asking about he scout mounts, scout scopes and pistol scopes.

I shoot some very hard kickers off the bench using the standard scope mounting and I've never had a scope touch me.

Sim,   Try setting up straiter and mounting gun higher when at the bench, see if this helps

I'm not new to shooting rifles that kick off a bench,  I've been shooting my 338 win mag since I was twelve.  The part of the problem like I said before is it's coming quite close while shooting off hand as well. Hell if I wear a hat it will hit the under side of the visor and about knock my hat off. shooting the same scope on a encore 45-70 I've had before I had no problem. stock design comes into play alot. I have a set of xs sights coming for the rifle and I have the same style of sights on my 870 and I like them alot. I plan on running those and maybe possibly a scout mount.

blackhawkencore, The Weaver V-3's a pretty decent scope - and a great choice on a .45-70, if you're going to scope it at all.

I own three V-3's, with one that's been on a .45-70 for 10 years w/o any issues - and it still give a clear/bright sight picture, no fogging, and lends itself to accurate shooting, to boot.

Finally settled on Tally quick detachable rings with a  Leupold 1x4 scope.  Haven't mounted everything yet, but I think it will work fine.  Thanks for all the great advice and comments.
