Caspian, Essex, or someone else?

I have a 1911 that needs a new slide. I see Midway carries just about any slide I could want. Any reason why I should be looking at one maker over any others? Just want to get the pistol back in good shape, with maybe a few "bells & whistles" added with the new slide. Anyone know where I might be able to pick up a 'take-off" slide, or any other options out there for me I might now be aware of? The pistol will not be getting 1,000's or rounds fired through it, but must be faithful. It will be my truck gun when i get it going again.

25 different posters will give you 25 different opinions.  Any name brand, forged slide will work as well as the other.  What is wrong with the pistols present slide?  There are a ton of aftermarket "bells and whistles" out there.  Its just a matter of what appeals to you, and how much you want to spend.  With the exception of new springs, or a tuned ejector, for example, most aftermarket parts work no better then stock.

The existing slide cracked right a the port. Was welded up and ground down, but of course it cracked out again. Looks like whoever had it before me might have tried some "custom" porting work or something. I got a great deal on it a while back and chunked it in the safe. But I think I'm about ready to try and build it. Want to do the work myself where ever I can (I feel I'm a pretty capable person on most things). And I have a machinist buddy close by for work I need machines on. I bought a book on them, I can't remember the author's name at the moment. But I think with all the drawings, dimensions, and techniques illustrated in the book I can give it a good go. With a few tools and jigs of course.

One more question, for now anyway. LOL

Does anyone make an ambi-slide stop? And more importantly.....Are they worth a darn?

I am a lefty, and the slide stop is kinda a pain on all semi's for me. I have developed the technique over the years. But might like to try one on this pistol if I can find one that's worth having?

SARCO has ambi slide stops for $14.95 and you might also want to check their new commercial slide $109.95 with novak style sights. I have one of those slides on my 1911 and it is a good slide. I bought their frame kit, it come with the slide and all the rest of the parts except for the frame $210. and I bought what they called a tweeker frame $49.95 said it might need some minor fitting of parts... mine needed very minor fitting. the picture is the finished product... My New/Used Colt Commander has a Caspian Slide---Sans any markings---looks good without roll marks.
I like Caspian products--this is not the first I have used.
Get it cut for the sights you are going to use.
